Goodyear to Layoff 330 Due to Strike
(Akron/Tire Review) With most of its North American tyre plants on limited production, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is temporarily laying off some 330 hourly workers at its Asheboro, North Carolina, steel wire plant. The tyremaker is reducing steel wire production due to the United Steelworkers’ strike. The temporary layoffs will begin Friday and will last until the strike is settled and Goodyear’s tire plants are back to full production.

(Akron/Tire Review) So just how long can the United Steelworkers stay on strike against Goodyear? According to the USW, the union is well-prepared for a lengthy strike. The USW says it has some $150 million in its “strike and defence fund,” and the fund is set up to pay each striking worker $100 per week ($115 after the 10th week). This all kicks in after the fourth week of a strike.

Since Corby Developments Limited acquired the majority shareholding in the Rockingham racing circuit in late 2005, it has implemented a £5 million development plan to give the circuit a major makeover. Billing itself as “Europes fastest motor racing circuit” – a claim based on the fact that in 2001 Tony Kanaan went round Rockinghams 1.5 mile oval in 24.719 seconds in his Ford/Lola Champ car – the scope of the facilities now available at Rockingham has attracted a number of events. This year the circuit has already hosted the Avon-sponsored British GT, 2006 Pickup Truck Racing Championship, SCSA Third Round and the Rockingham VSR Championship.

Newton Aycliffe-based Credential Environmental and European Metal Recycling Ltd have signed an exclusive agreement for the processing of scrap tyres, in line with this summer’s start of the landfill tyre ban. Under the 12-month contract, car tyres on and off rim will be transferred from EMR sites to Credential Environmental tyre processing centres. An extension clause is included in the agreement, subject to approval by both parties.

When the all-new, redesigned 2007 Chrysler Sebring rolls into US showrooms this autumn it will be fitted exclusively with tyres from Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire, LLC (BFNT). BFNT will supply the Chrysler Group’s Sebring Sedan with Firestone FR690 tyres in size P215/65R16 96T, while the Chrysler Sebring Touring and Chrysler Sebring Limited will ride on Bridgestone-brand Turanza EL40002 tyres in sizes P215/60R17 95T and P215/55R18 94T, respectively.

Sibur-Russian Tires, Russia’s largest tyre holding company, has announced that it will build a steel radial tyre plant capable of producing 1 million tyres a year by 2010. The project is set to be approved in the second half of 2007. According to analysts at Russia’s Centre Invest, construction will begin in 2008. The new facility is likely to be registered as a wholly owned Sibur-Russian Tires subsidiary. Sibur Holding president Alexander Dyukov had earlier told Vedomosti that similar arrangements would be used to upgrade other subsidiaries.

Delticom AG, known as mytyres.co.uk in the UK, is aiming to make its debut on the Frankfurt stock exchange this Autumn. In 2005 Delticom reported 129 million euros in sales, an increase of approximately 60 per cent. Roughly 5.6 million euros of this was EBIT, according to German newspapers. “We see good possibilities of developing our already strong international operational readiness further in the coming years around the good growth opportunities that are opening in the online tyre market,” commented Delticom director, Dr Andreas Pruefer.

(Akron/Tire Review) There has been more talk than talking as the United Steelworkers’ strike against 16 Goodyear plants reached its sixth day yesterday. Formal talks between the tyremaker and the union have not resumed, and while both sides say they are ready to restart negotiations when the other party is ready, neither side seems to be in a hurry to get back to the bargaining table.

Bridgestone Corporation announced today that it will raise prices on 1 February 2007 for tyres, tubes and flaps sold in the replacement market in Japan. Prices for winter tyres will be increased on 1 April 2007. Specific price increases include 5.5 per cent for passenger car and light truck tyres, 8 per cent for truck and bus tyres, 10 per cent for construction vehicle tyres, 5.5 per cent for motorcycle tyres (excluding certain products) and 8 per cent for other kinds of tyres, and for tubes and flaps (excluding those for motorcycles).
