‘World’s largest’ agri tyre to debut at Agritechnica

Amongst the exhibits at the upcoming Agritechnica show in Hanover, Germany will be the largest agricultural radial ever produced. This behemoth of the farm is Firestone’s new DT23 in size IF850/75R42. Manufactured by Firestone in the USA, the giant DT23 is designed for the latest generation of 500 plus horsepower heavy tractors. With an overall diameter of 2.32 metres, the DT23 has an 850/75 section/aspect ratio and rim size of 42 inches (107 centimetres). It weighs 510 kilograms and has a load capacity of 9.5 tons at speeds of up to 50 km/h when inflated at 1.6 bar.

Bridgestone donates to Thailand flood aid

Bridgestone Corporation has announced it will donate 50 million yen (£408,000) to assist flood-stricken regions in Thailand. The Japanese manufacturer’s operations in Thailand – Bridgestone runs ten manufacturing facilities there – will also donate funds and food to the value of approximately 3.4 million yen to further aid for those affected by the disaster. Upon announcing these aid measures, the Bridgestone Group expressed its “sincere condolences to those who have suffered from the flood” and wished the nation of Thailand a rapid recovery.

Degenhart targeting above-average growth in India for Conti

Continental AG chief Elmar Degenhart has said the company will target above-average profitable growth in BRIC countries, especially in China and other Asian countries, Tire Review reports. In a recent visit to India, Degenhart, executive board chairman, stated that BRIC countries are at the centre of focus for the company‘s growth strategy.

Toyo to fit D3 Group Le Monstre CTS-V Coupe at SEMA

Toyo Tire USA has announced its fourth vehicle to be displayed at its booth at the 2011 SEMA Show: Le Monstre, a one-of-a-kind 2012 CTS-V Coupe from renowned Cadillac tuner, The D3 Group. The car will roll on 275/30ZR20 and 345/25ZR20 Toyo Proxes T1R UHP summer tyres. It will compete in time attack events during the 2012 road racing season.

Nokian wins German winter tyre test

Nokian’s new WR D3 winter tyre has been awarded victory in German car magazine Sport Auto’s winter tyre test 2011. The Finnish brand scored 99/100 for its snow performance and 68/70 in the dry. “Nokian is clearly ahead of the others with regard to winter properties. In the dry you can rely on it, too,” said Sport Auto. The tyre, priced at 169 euros, was the most economically priced tyre, with the most expensive tyre tested costing 57 euros more. Only premium winter tyres in the dimension 225/45-17 were tested.

Goodyear third quarter figures show strong performance

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has carded an all-time record for quarterly sales and earnings in the third quarter, going past the $6 billion mark in sales for the first time. “I’m very pleased with our performace,” said Richard J. Kramer, chairman and chief executive officer. “Our third quarter results are another step on the path toward our 2013 targets and especially meaningful given the challenging market conditions in much of the world,” he added.

HiQ offers free winter safety checks

Fast fit franchise HiQ has announced that it will give free winter safety checks to motorists, prompted by Department for Transport figures indicating a three per cent increase in road accidents resultant from slippery road conditions caused by bad weather in the last five years. The free comprehensive vehicle inspections will be available at all of HiQ’s 150 centres. HiQ fast fit manager Stuart Carr says that the franchise believes winter tyres are “absolutely essential when travelling safely during the inevitable freezing temperatures.”

Ringtons switches fleet to Michelin

Leading tea and coffee retailer Ringtons has signed up with Michelin in a deal that will see the manufacturer provide tyres for its 200-vehicle fleet of light commercial vehicles. The Newcastle company had fitted mid-range tyres two years ago in an attempt to reduce costs. Its fleet manager Stephen Killinger says that the cheaper product led to a greater frequency of replacement due to a reduction in tyre life.

Tire Group International appoints business development VP

Tire Group International has announced its appointment of Osvaldo Marchante as vice-president of business development. Marchante has more than 25 years of extensive automotive and on/off highway industry experience with multinationals. He was most recently the president and CEO of Detroit Diesel-Allison (Florida), overseeing eight full service facilities and a network of multiple dealers, customers and OEM’s throughout Florida.

Vettel takes on Hembery in tyre fitting challenge

Sebastian Vettel, the first winner of the Formula One Drivers’ Championship in the Pirelli era, took on Pirelli’s motorsport director Paul Hembery in a tyre fitting challenge at the Buddh International Circuit in India yesterday afternoon. The German driver had never fitted a tyre before, though that did not prevent him from beating Hembery’s time by 31 seconds. Despite help from the Pirelli crew, both men took more than twice as long as the experts in assembling the wheel from scratch. The event, filmed by television crews around the world, is another example of Pirelli’s ongoing mission to put tyres in the limelight during its period as F1’s supplier.

New trade deal will aid US doing tyre business with South Korea

TIA says that the renewed free trade deal with South Korea is a good deal for the U.S. tyre market. President Obama signed the renewal of the U.S. Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), which was part of a trade pact originally agreed to between the U.S. and South Korea in 2007 – Korean-United States Free Trade Agreement.

Automechanika Shanghai aiming for record attendance

Automechanika Shanghai, which will be held from 7 – 10 December at the Shanghai New International Expo Center claims to be Asia's largest trade fair for automotive parts, accessories, equipment and services. The show is expected to house a record-breaking 3,600 exhibitors, a 15 per cent increase compared to the previous show.

Bridgestone Illinois OTR Plant Getting Enhancements

The Bloomington Pantagraph reports that the Bridgestone Americas OTR tyre plant in that Illinois city is getting a $20 million capital investment. The Bridgestone Firestone Off Road Tire Co. plant’s capacity will be increased and some 40 jobs added, the report said.
