Pirelli will provide tyres to the MSA British Rally Championship for the next two years. The premium manufacturer has supplied the control tyre to the series since 2007, and was previously contracted until the end of the 2012 season. Pirelli says the addition of two years has shown its ongoing commitment to national-level motorsport.
Thorite has expanded its sales territory into the West Midlands with the opening of a new sales and service centre in Brierley Hill, near Dudley. Trading under the name LL Fluid Power – a wholly owned division of Thorite, the new centre reportedly provides full service and support facilities. Thorite prides itself on being the UK’s only complete compressed air, pneumatics and process specialist and is an official distributor for well over 200 major fluid power manufacturers, including Norgren, SMC, Festo, Parker, Burkert, Aro and Piab, the bulk of whose products are available on next day delivery.
Russia is currently a growth market for specialty chemicals group Lanxess. In the first nine months of 2011 the company enjoyed sales of close to 50 million euros there, more than twice what it earned in the whole of 2009. To capitalise on the expanding Russian automotive and tyre industries, Lanxess has now decided to invest in a new facility in Lipetsk, some 300 miles southeast of Moscow. Construction of the plant, which will be operated by Lanxess’ Rhein Chemie subsidiary, is set to start early this year and production is scheduled to commence during the first half of 2013. The site will be built at a cost of five million euros and will employ around 40 people in the medium term.
Only last week Continental announced plans to run a joint venture operation with Korea’s SK Innovation to develop, manufacture and market lithium ion batteries systems for electric vehicles; now the German company has released a few figures outlining why it sees so much potential in the electric vehicle market. Following approval from antitrust authorities, the Bosch Automotive Aftermarket division has completed its takeover of Taiwan’s Unipoint Group. The parties involved in the transaction have agreed not to disclose the purchase price and report that both existing Unipoint brands – Unipoint and NSA – will be retained by Bosch.
Tyres have traditionally been round and black, but Bridgestone is set to change this. The Japanese manufacturer announced on 13 January that it has developed a new printing technology for tyres – a technology Bridgestone calls revolutionary and says differs from any tyre printing or colouring process presently on the market.
Continental has added two larger models to its range of premium commercial vehicle tyres with the introduction of new, larger steer and trailer products for volume-optimised transport operators. The HSR2 XL for front steer axle is designed for higher load capacities, while the second is the HTR2 trailer tyre in 55 cross-section for use on high volume vehicles.
The Infinity Tyres Foundation has donated funds to the Indian High School of Dubai (IHS) to “help develop its infrastructures and broaden its programme of scholarships”. The Foundation said the funds were “intended to reinforce our interest in the future leaders of tomorrow and our strong commitment to making a better and fairer society”. Infinity hopes that its donation will allow the school to decrease student fees and award generous scholarships.
With the first Chinese brand models set for sale in the UK and various European markets by the end of 2012, Chinese tyre manufacturers with OE-supply deals in their homeland could begin to see a very small amount of pull-through.
While some Chinese cars such as the Shanghai Automotive-owned MG brand are already driving on British roads under local monikers, Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd’s Emgrand EC7 family hatchback and saloon will be something of a first when it goes on sale in the UK. Geely, which is currently mid-way through a UK dealer recruitment programme targeting 40 dealers, appears to be trying to do what Hyundai and Kia have done in recent years and build a position quickly from scratch by offering “good quality, really good value for money and a long warranty.”
Automotive industry charity, BEN will hold its inaugural BEN Blades Summer Ball on Thursday, 21 June 2012 at Sywell Aerodrome in Northamptonshire. The event, raising money for the charity, will include two aerobatics displays, with the opportunity for attendees to take a ride in one of several classic flying machines. This will be followed by a Champagne Reception and a three-course meal.
Hirohide Hamashima, formerly manager of Bridgestone’s Motorsport department, has been hired by Ferrari to be the luxury car brand’s Formula One Team tyre development director. Hamashima worked with Bridgestone, which supplied tyres to F1 from 1997, until pulling out at the end of the 2010 season.
Bridgestone Europe is to roll out a new round of price increases for retread materials across Europe during the first quarter of 2012. Starting on 1 March and varying from country to country, price increases will average 10 per cent for Bridgestone and Bandag pre-cure tread products and 8 per cent for Bandag cushion gum products.
On 29 December the Sibur petrochemical holding company completed the sale of 100 of its OAO SIBUR-Russian Tyres (SRT) business to a group of investors including the management of SRT and Vadim Gurinov, former CEO of the company. No financial details relating to the sale have yet been released.
The sale follows the restructuring of SRT with the sale of two of its non-core plants: OAO Sibur-Volzhskiy, a manufacturer of synthetic fibres, which was acquired by CJSC Gazprom Stroy TEK Salavat and OAO Volzhkiy Nitrogen and Oxygen Plant, which specialises in commercial grade gas production and was sold to the ROEL Group.
Six months before the opening of Hillhead 2012, some 350 exhibitors had already signed up by Christmas to participate in the extractive and construction industries exhibition.
Borrachas Vipal recently brought together more than 60 journalists and recycling business representatives at a road test event held in Portugal. Members of the Asociación Nacional de Profesionales de los Pneumáticos (Anirp) [National Association of Tyre Professionals] as well as Portuguese journalists all took part. The aim of the event was to bring together media professionals to test cars and lorries that use recycled tyres.
