Some nine out of ten users said they would buy the tyre again, setting new records in customer loyalty achievements.
Republican Senator Tauzin’s data on 11 replacement tyre models has been forwarded to Ford. Tauzin, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee has asked Ford for a comprehensive explanation of how it decided which brands of tyres to use as replacements. He has also asked Ford to run “rig tests” on all replacement tyre brands before installing them. This follows Committee investigators’ claims that 11 of the replacement tyre models had higher damage and injury rates than the Firestone Wilderness ATs being replaced.
Goodyear has disputed data cited at the congressional hearing into the Ford/Firestone dispute. The company claims to have submitted its own safety data and is questioning the committee’s interpretation of the data they have already received. According to Goodyear the Ford data of damage claims of five parts per million is based on a Ford standard and that a damage claim does not reflect a defect. Goodyear added that “the use of relevant data and comparisons by the committee will remedy any consumer confusion of fears”.
The former high-ranking Michelin manager Carlos Ghosn has been officially appointed CEO of Nissan. De facto Ghosn has already been playing this role for months. The move is seen as an attempt to bind Ghosn to Nissan.
Jean Michel Guillon, who used to be head of sales for Michelin in Germany before he assumed responsibility as Vice President Sales for MAST (Michelin Americas Small Tires), has become Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President Michelin North America Inc.
Under pressure in Venezuela, Ford has produced an advertisement listing statistics that show that the Explorer compares favourably in safety terms with other SUVs. Although no competitive vehicles are mentioned by name in the advert, both Daimler/Chrysler and GM (Venezuela) have objected to it and are casting doubts on the accuracy of the figures.
Continental has played down UK press reports that cracks have appeared in their CT22 pattern tyre, fitted as OE to the Skoda Felicia. Technical Services Manager Steve Howat described the cracks as “cosmetic”, caused by the Otrokovice factory using a different cement to ensure adhesion at the splice of the tread strip. The tyre is of dual-compound construction and Conti says there is “no danger” that the superficial cracks (which are only in the top tread compound)could pose a safety or longevity problem – the tyres will continue to perform well throughout a normal lifespan. Conti says that it has CT22 tyres which have been removed due to normal wear and tear and they show no signs of structural damage. Nevertheless, Conti is offering to replace tyres for customers who are worried about the cosmetic appearance.
The Tanzanian parliament was told yesterday that the Arusha-based General Tyre factory was coping with producing passenger car tyres but was failing to produce truck tyres. Government taxes on imported truck tyres were punishing domestic businesses which had little choice but to buy imported Bridgestone and Michelin truck tyres.
Carlyle, the US private equity group, is said to be on the verge of paying Continental one billion Euro for its ContiTech division. Analysts say that the money will be used to finance purchases aimed at achieving Conti’s ambition to become a “chassis management” company rather than just a tyre manufacturer.
The latest investor update from Goodyear reflects the worldwide state of the motor industry. US and European passenger car replacement sales were above last year’s figures, but commercial sales were down. OE shipments in the US were down, but level with last year’s figures in the European Union. Eastern Europe showed a flat replacement market and a 20% drop in OE supply. In Latin America replacement sales were down, but OE was up in May. A similar picture was painted in Asia. Throughout the world market increasing raw materials costs and reduction in auto manufacture output has affected trade adversely.
The European Commission has fined Michelin 19.89 million Euro for “abusing its dominant position” in the French heavy vehicle replacement tyre market from 1990 to 1998. In a statement, the EC said that “Michelin’s complex system of quantitative rebates, bonuses and other commercial practices illegally tied dealers and foreclosed the French market to other tyre manufacturers.” This applied to both new and retreaded tyres and the Commission took a serious view of events, as it said that this was the second time that Michelin had engaged in such anti-competitive behaviour in Europe.
Ford chief Jacques Nasser faced some tough questioning at yesterday’s Congressional hearing into the Firestone tyre/Ford Explorer situation. ‘Billy’ Tauzin, from Louisiana, revealed that one of the brands of tyre being used to replace the Firestones had a failure record nearly 25 times worse than the Wilderness. Nasser said that, if this was correct “then we’ll act on it”. Tauzin also criticised BF Inc’s John Lampe of attempting to shift the blame on to Ford.
