Sun lovers at a secluded naturist beach have been forced to share their sandy haven with a large mysterious visitor that, like them, seems happy to flaunt what others may prefer to keep discretely tucked away. And while regulars at Cape Town’s Sandy Bay inlet may be used to seeing all manner of sagging and rubbery apparitions during the course of a day at the beach, this particular one is turning heads, as it is a tyre from an airliner.
India’s fifth largest tyre manufacturer, Birla Tyres suffered a fire at its plant in Orissa’s Balasore district on Saturday 3 February, causing damage to its chemical stocks. The fire was attributed to a possible short circuit, which engulfed the dye unit of the plant.
According to local reports the fire was brought under control within three hours with the help of the fire brigade. Two fire tenders attended the scene while a fire engine belonging to the company was also pressed into service to control the flames.
Tyres feature strongly in this week’s UK news but for once it is news we could do without. More than a hundred cars in Gornal, north west of Birmingham, have had their tyres slashed by a young man – described as a ‘yob’ by local media – wielding a power drill.
Residents awoke to find their cars sitting on wheel rims after the attack, and many are now facing hundreds of pounds in repair bills. Those affected include a disabled person whose car, with mobility stickers prominently displayed, had all four tyres slashed.
A man aged around 25 was spotted at work with the drill at four o’clock in the morning, but he evaded capture in the subsequent pursuit.

(Akron/Tire Review) Amtel-Vredestein N.V. announced that it has accepted the resignation of executive board member Anne van’t Veer, and managing director of Amsterdam Trade Bank N.V.
He joined the Amtel-Vredestein executive board in September 2006.
Van’t Veer said he resigned for personal reasons. Amtel-Vredestein said it did not expect to replace him at this time, and his duties would be assumed by other members of the board.

The Environment Agency has given cement producer Cemex permission to use as a substitute fuel at its Rugby plant. This decision comes following a trial rigorously controlled and monitored by the Environment Agency.
According to the Environment Agency’s area environment manager, Ian Withers, the agency is satisfied with the trial’s results. “We have studied the report and the results of the tyre trial in great detail before coming to this decision,” he said. “We are satisfied that Cemex has met the requirements of its Permit and can now burn tyres in accordance with the conditions in the Permit.
Michelin has joined forces with world-renowned football brand Umbro for the development of football related products. The first such product to come out of this union is a new type of football boot, the X Boot III. Featuring what has been dubbed ‘touch control’ technology, the X Boot III is made from a unique material that, when combined with the suede strike area of the boot, results – according to tests conducted in lightly wet conditions at Liverpool John Moore’s University – in up to a 90 per cent improvement in control, touch and striking accuracy.

Michelin has launched a tyre that the company claims to be the most notable technological breakthrough since the radial technology was first applied to truck tyres in 1952. The tyre – Michelin’s X One MaxiTrailer – reportedly provides up to 50 per cent more mileage than a comparable standard 385/65 R 22.5 tyre.
