Michelin to Increase Capacity in Romania

Production capacity at Michelin’s facilities in Romania will be expanded in order to make the country’s operations a strategic centre for the supply of tyres to Southeast Europe. Bucharest based daily newspaper Curierul National quotes Michelin co-managing partner Didier Miraton as stating “Romania is important to us and we intend to produce more, to turn the factories that we have there into a strategic point for South-Eastern Europe, through which we will provide tyres to the countries in the region.” Specific details of the intended capacity or the value of Michelin’s investment in the expansion were not given.

Apollo Tyres Aiming for the ‘Top Six’

Apollo Tyres has its eyes on becoming a global top six player within the next five years. Furthermore, by this time it intends to achieve an annual turnover of US$4 to 5 billion.

“Me and my whole team’s desire is to be amongst the top six players of the world in the next five years,” said Apollo Tyres vice chairman and joint managing director Neeraj Kanwar said. When asked how large the company needs to grow in terms of revenue in order to reach this select group, Mr. Kanwar replied: “Well, if you are talking of the top 5-6, their turnover is in excess of US$4-5 billion dollars. The top three players in the world are in higher teens, then is Continental which is in the US$4-6 billion dollar range.”

Baolong Promotes CV TPMS

Shanghai Baolong has embarked on a new publicity campaign promoting its commercial vehicle tyre pressure monitoring system (CV TPMS). The system is designed to permanently monitor both the tyre pressure and temperature and warns the driver in the event of a dangerous pressure loss or overheating, making an important contribution to road safety and fuel economy. The system is already available for use as a stand alone system or integrated into all classes of commercial vehicles – including trailers and semi-trailers.

Each battery-powered wheel transmitter installed inside the tyre measures the pressure and temperature every four seconds, together with the individual ID code of the transmitter, these values are sent by RF to the receiver via transceiver at 30-seconds intervals. The receiver evaluates the data, identifies the transmitter and decides whether or not the driver needs to be informed.

Drivers Downsize As Credit Crunch Bites

Over a third of used car buyers are looking to counteract rising motoring charges and challenging economic conditions by downsizing to a smaller, more cost-effective car. In a survey carried out on www.glass.co.uk – the Glass’s Guide used car valuation website, 38 per cent of buyers cited fuel prices and rises in road tax for heavier polluting vehicles as factors motivating them to swap their car for a more compact and efficient model.

The poll also revealed that a growing number of motorists are switching to diesel as a way of cutting running costs. Of those surveyed, 29 per cent stated an intention to exchange their petrol vehicle for a diesel model, expecting to take advantage of significant reductions in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.

Barum Reports Show Record Sales in 2007

Continental’s AG’s Czech division, Barum Continental reportedly generated sales of 44.658 billion Czech koruny (roughly £1.3 billion) in 2007. According to reports in the Prague Daily Monitor, the figure is up 11.8 per cent year-on-year. The newspaper also reported that the company’s profits were up almost 25 per cent to 1.915 billion koruny (£59.26 million) in 2007. Sales to EU countries are said to have reached 22.491 billion koruny (roughly £695 million), rising by around 18.6 per cent over 2006.

Insurance Company Owns 5.5 Per Cent Of Nokian

Nokian Tyres has received an announcement, according to which the ownership of Varma Mutual Pension Insurance Company has increased above the level of five per cent of the voting rights and share capital in Nokian Tyres plc as a result of a share transaction concluded on the 16th October 2008. Varma Mutual Pension Insurance Company now holds a total of 6,870,657 Nokian Tyres’ shares, representing 5.50 per cent of the company’s 124,831,190 shares and voting rights.

Vacu-Lug Appoints New Business Development Manager

Roy Yeomans has been appointed to the position of Business Development Manager for Vacu-Lug Traction Tyres Limited. Covering the key transport sectors of distribution and logistics, Yeomans will be responsible for further increasing and developing Vacu-Lug’s penetration within the UK’s major fleets.

Having worked for more than 20 years in the commercial vehicle tyre industry, including spells with Continental, National Tyres and ATS Euromaster, Roy Yeomans brings his experience to the Vacu-Lug team. During his career he has fulfilled a number of roles ranging from sales and contracts management to national fleet account management. He was also instrumental in developing Continental’s highly respected training and technical department Entyrety.

Indian Production Rises as Exports Fall in August

Indian tyre manufacturers have seen production across all segments rise five per cent (6,990,767) on August 2007 (6,674,269), while the numbers for the first five months of the new financial year yielded an eight per cent gain on the average monthly production (7,059,732) against the same period in 2007, say figures released by the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association. The same could not be said for exports, where the cross-segment figure for August ’08 dropped considerably by 12 per cent from 535,325 to 473,444.

A particular highlight of the collected statistics is the action of the Tractor segment in August. Exports fell by 71 and 41 per cent respectively in front and rear categories compared to the monthly figures for 2007, though at the same time production in these sections rose 18 and 103 per cent. As these proportions suggest, the numbers for rear Tractor tyre production are particularly striking, going from 100,676 to 204,118 for August YOY. In terms of average monthly production between April and August 2008, front and rear Tractor tyres have increased in numbers by 10 and 30 per cent compared to the same five months in 2007. Looking at export figures, these segments have also witnessed an average month-on-month decrease of 41 and 17 per cent respectively in the same period.

‘Buy Now’ Option Added to Thompson Web Site

Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. has added a “Buy Now” feature to its Mickey Thompson website. The move will allow consumers “access to easy, one-click shopping, instant price and shipping cost comparisons, and a simple shopping-cart style check out that makes purchasing tyres and wheels quick, easy and fun,” Cooper said. According to Cooper, “when the “Buy Now” button is selected, a revolutionary search engine technology searches the top Internet sales locations for pricing, and links the user to the shopping cart for that unique part number.”

“The benefits to the consumer include eliminating the cumbersome and time-consuming process that is associated with shopping for a product online by utilising a system that identifies the product by its unique part number,” Cooper said. “The benefits to the internet retailer include premium positioning, measurable/trackable results, and premium level support, including advertising support through consumer print ads, web and banner ads, Google AdWords marketing, and cable television ads in select markets.” (Tire Review/Akron)

Mood of N.A. Consumers Fall to New Lows

Current economic conditions have seriously shaken the confidence of North American consumers. Last week, the Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers said its index of confidence plummeted to 57.5 in October from 70.3 in September – its steepest monthly drop ever. The index’s all-time low was 51.7, which it hit in May 1980; it is now at its lowest point since June. “All of the prior double-digit declines were based on severe economic dislocations with the losses accelerated by fear and panic,” the report said.

Canadian consumer confidence also fell in October, reaching the lowest level in more than 25 years, according to the Conference Board of Canada’s consumer confidence index also released last week. The Board’s index fell to 73.9, the lowest level since the third quarter of 1982 during the height of the early 1980s downturn. “The global credit crunch and major stock market declines clearly had an effect on consumer confidence,” said Pedro Antunes, the board’s director of national and provincial forecasts. “Consumers felt that they would be worse off in six months, indicating concerns that the financial crisis would not be resolved quickly.” (Tire Review/Akron)

Pirelli Star Driver for Asia-Pacific Region Selected

New Zealander Mark Tapper has been selected to represent the Asia-Pacific Region in the Pirelli Star Driver scheme. The 27 year-old from Auckland, along with co-driver Jeff Cress, beat nine other contenders in the selection process, which took place over two rallies in New Zealand and Malaysia.

Tapper is the second driver to be named from the five who will benefit from the initiative, organised jointly by Pirelli and the FIA, to give young drivers a foot in the door of the FIA World Rally Championship. The Pirelli Star Driver programme will give five young talents (one each from Africa, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific regions, plus two from Europe) the chance to compete in six WRC events in a Group N or S2000 car prepared and run by a top team. The drivers who earn a place on the Pirelli Star Driver scheme next year will get a chance to show what they can do in Portugal, Italy, Greece, Finland, Spain and Great Britain.

Goodyear to Suspend Gadsden Production a Third Time

Goodyear representatives are reported to have given news of another temporary production shutdown at the company’s Gadsden, Alabama factory. This latest shutdown, announced October 15, will be the third to take place since August.

According to local newspaper the Gadsden Times, plant communications manager Jackie Brehm Edmondson said the factory will cease production at 1pm on October 25 and resume production at 1am on November 2. Employees were notified of the shutdown on October 13.

Traditionally a time of embracing the ghoulish and extorting sweets from neighbours, Halloween has in itself become a horrific ordeal for some businesses – tyre thefts are on the rise as preparations for the evening get underway. Northern Ireland newspaper the Strabane Chronicle reports that thousands of pounds worth of products, including tyres, pallets and other materials are being stolen from local businesses and included in October 31 bonfire preparations.
