If Fast Fit Be the Food of Love…

Friends, Romans, motorists, lend me your ears…Tyre technicians at a fast fit centre in Bath have been brushing up on their Shakespeare in a novel celebration of the Bard’s birthday with drivers in the city. Staff at HiQ wrote Shakespeare’s most famous lines on the windscreens of all cars on Friday 23 April – the date widely believed to be Shakespeare’s birthday. And what, you may ask, does Shakespeare have to do with the world of rubber, save his love letter to the black circle, 'Pericles, Prince of Tyre'? It is suggested that HiQ Bath’s forecourt was the ground from which Shakespeare recited his soliloquies in the city.

We’re Back on the Road to Success, Conti Shareholders Told

Addressing the company’s Annual Shareholders’ Meeting, held in Hannover, Germany on April 28, chairman of the Continental AG Executive Board, Dr. Elmar Degenhart, stated “if you wanted to summarise the year 2009, you could boil it down to a simple notion – state of emergency.” The major events affecting the market, he added, resulted in the most dramatic economic crisis in the post-war era.

Continental Back in the Black in Q1

During the three months to March 31, Continental AG achieved sales of almost six billion euros, a 1.7 billion euro year-on-year increase. At 494 million euros, the company’s reported EBIT was more than 650 million euros higher than the comparative figure for the previous year’s quarter. From this total, sales from Conti’s Rubber Group accounted for 2.2 billion of the total, and reported group EBIT was 313 million euros.

Techking Donates to Yushu Earthquake Relief

Techking has pledged to donate US$1.00 from the sale of each OTR tyre sold during the next three months to help those affected by the Yushu earthquake on April 14. The 7.1 magnitude quake in southern China shook towns in the sparsely populated Tibetan Plateau, killing 2,220 and injuring more than 12,000 people.

Bridgestone Holds G-MEC Opening Ceremony

On April 28 Bridgestone held an opening ceremony for its Global Manufacturing Education Center (G-MEC) in the Bridgestone G-MEC Building, a training building established in Kodaira City, Tokyo. The ceremony, held at the newly opened G-MEC Building, marked the official launch of the new G-MEC training and education programme.

Pneus Online Reports 40% Sales Increase Due to UK Online Tyre Purchase Habit

Pneus Online’s turnover grew 40 per cent in the first quarter of 2010. According to the company, “a harsh winter and a difficult economical environment enhanced the growth of the discounter.” The company has not released any details of its profitability. Pneus Online made a 14.7 million euro turnover in 2009 selling in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Austria, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italia and Ireland.

Omni United Has European Markets on its Radar

Omni United, one of Singapore’s fastest growing tyre companies is aiming to use its presence at Reifen 2010 (Hall 2-06) to extend the reach of its Radar brand into Europe. Omni reports that it will be seeking new customers and will also be launching its new passenger, light truck, SUV and the UHP lines into the European market at the show. The company manufactures the Radar brand in Indonesia, India and China. Omni says it aims to ensure products reach their destinations on time, every-time with advanced supply chain management systems.

Michelin XZY 3 Tyre Tops 280,000km on R.W. Stewart Tractor

Michelin is highlighting the ability to get increased mileage from its XZY 3 tractor tyre through the regrooving process administered by ATS Euromaster during a routine vehicle maintenance inspection, by exemplifying a set of steer axle tyres fitted to a Scania tractor owned by R.W. Stewart – one of Scotland’s oldest privately-owned transport businesses. The tractor has clocked up more than 280,000 km on a set of Michelin XZY 3 steer axle tyres. R.W. Stewart managing director, Alan Stewart, comments: We have found Michelin’s XZY 3 tyres offer us improved steering feel and durability over the mixture of terrain we operate on, combined with the best sidewall and damage protection of any tyre we have found on the market.”

Jerez Circuit’s “Diverse Corner Layout” a Challenge for Bridgestone MotoGP Tyre

Following the postponement of the Japanese Grand Prix (thanks to a certain Icelandic volcano), Bridgestone is heading back to the scene of its pre-season testing in Jerez, Spain this weekend for the second round of the 2010 MotoGP Championship. The Jerez circuit is “a good test circuit because of the diversity of the corner layout”, says Tohru Ubukata, manager of Bridgestone’s Motorcycle Tyre Development Department. “This means that we require a tyre with a very balanced character to provide good handling from low speed to high speed and from flat corners through changes in elevation,” Ubukata continues.

What Will Reifen 2010's 550 Exhibitors Bring to the Show?

With tyre businesses forced to face the unprecedented combination of global recession, high raw material costs and increasingly thorough legislative demands, the two years since the last Essen show have been some of the toughest in the market’s history. And yet, if you will excuse the pun, the tyre business seems to have a perpetual ability to “bounce back” in the face of adversity. In fact some brands – largely those operating in the mid and upper mid range segments – actually outperformed their pre-recession sales records, resulting in increased market share at least in terms of units sales.

That said, all businesses have had to cope with the same credit crunch-induced reticence amongst consumers to spend any money at all, while at the same time having to deal with (either directly for the manufacturers or indirectly for those importing, wholesaling and trading) high input costs for raw materials such as natural rubber.

ATS Euromaster Launches 2010 Winter Tyre Offer

Following the onset of the harshest winter driving conditions in years during the 2009-2010 season, there has been much speculation – and some evidence – over the likelihood of growth in the UK market for specialist tyres in 2010. For example, Finnish manufacturer Nokian has recently reported “strongest growth” in winter tyres (see ‘Nokian Preparing for Growith in 2010’). ATS Euromaster is positioning itself for a run on winter rubber having launched a dedicated cold weather tyre offering for car and light commercial fleets up to 7.5 tonnes, in which it will label and store off-season tyres for customers. The company says it will build on “a wealth of expertise within the Euromaster Group”, which already supplies, fits and stores cold weather tyres for fleets across northern Europe. ATS-E says it supplies 300,000 cold weather tyres to Holland every year – a significant number, especially considering this is in a country with a similar climate to the UK.

Japan’s Tyre-makers Stock Gains on Increased Citi Growth Forecast

Shares in Japan’s three largest tyre manufacturers (Bridgestone, Yokohama and Sumitomo) have risen in Tokyo trading this morning, following recommendations made by Citigroup. Bloomberg reports that the gains were made following a report by Citi’s analysts suggesting 2010’s global demand growth in tyres would be 8.2 per cent, as opposed to the previously quoted 5.5 per cent.

Keegan Believes Leadership was “Catalyst for Corporate Transformation”

Robert Keegan has made his first public appearance since Richard J Kramer took over the role as chief executive officer at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, speaking to 600 at the Greater Akron Speaks Out for Values breakfast in the tyre manufacturer’s home town on 26 April. The Akron Beacon Journal reports that Keegan told those attending the Christian business fundraiser that when he took on the role in 2003, the company “needed core change” and that installing new “inspirational, aspirational leaders” had been the “catalyst for corporate transformation”.

Dotz Launches New GTR Rim

Dotz has released its latest deep-dish design, which offers a 6-spoke profile, combined with a dish and the all-important deep lip. As its Eastern look suggests, the wheel is aimed squarely at the Japanese and tuner markets, but its makers hope it will be a hit in the VAG scene, with fitments being available for all of the usual suspects. Size wise, 18-inch offered in either 7.5 or 8-inch widths and 19-inch diameter available in both 8.5 and 9.5-inch. All are available from stock immediately in the UK. Prices start from £118 + VAT.
