Toyo’s Weinger Retires

Following a career with Toyo Tire U.S.A spanning 28 years, Steve Weinger has announced his retirement. Weinger joined Toyo in 1982 after more than nine years with Michelin, and was initially employed in the commercial product side of the company as Fleet Promotions sales manager. Later he became the national director of Truck Tire Sales and progressed to ultimately take on the position of senior vice president of Sales & Marketing. Toyo comments that, while serving in that capacity, he implemented programmes which resulted in record increases in overall sales.

US Senator “Owes Retreading Industry an Apology”

Although most likely uttered out of ignorance rather than malice, comments made by Iowa Senator Tom Harkin have the potential to tarnish the reputation of retreaders throughout the US. During a speech at the Iowa Democratic Party’s state convention on June 12, Harking referred to a Republican party candidate as a ‘retread’ – an insult that, you may be amazed to learn, has gained a measure of popularity on the other side of the Atlantic – and then continued by saying “and the problem with retreads is that they have a tendency to blow out and cause a lot of wrecks.”

TRA: Recycle Tyres or Face Jail

Garages and tyre dealers are being warned that they could face significant fines or custodial sentences if they fail to recycle the used tyres they collect correctly. Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) made the warning following the recent prosecution of nine individuals who were fined nearly £75,000 for illegally dumping rubbish which included used tyres.

Caledonian Logistics Renews Pirelli Truck Tyre Deal

After seven years with a Pirelli policy, Caledonian Logistics has renewed its truck tyre supply deal with the company for 2010/2011. Utilising Pirelli’s new updated Amaranto range, designed specifically for long haul usage, the company reports that it is “confident of continued excellent mileage performance and minimal downtime” following the contract renewal.

Graham Hutchison, Pirelli’s UK director of truck, was obviously pleased: “Lots of Companies chase new business, and we do, but it’s the existing partnerships that are the backbone of your success. Pirelli and Caledonian have worked together over a number of years and we look forward to a new year of fruitful partnership and success.”

Rösler Group Celebrates 50th Anniversary in Essen

Rösler Group celebrated the OTR tyre business’ 50th anniversary during the recent Reifen 2010 trade fair. Customers, partner businesses and representatives of companies from around the world came to celebrate with company founder, Paul Roesler, Sr. His sons Paul, Jr. and Martin Rösler who have been guiding the company for the past 20 years were in attendance as were employees from Germany and Australia. And according to the company, its involvement in this year’s Essen show has been “a complete success for the entire Rösler Group.”

Hutchison “Makes History” on Dunlop’s D211GP at Isle of Man TT

The Isle of Man TT saw a first this weekend as Ian Hutchinson completed the first clean sweep of five out of five wins at the festival in its hundred-plus year history. The Senior TT saw Hutchinson take the lead after a gruelling few hours during a stopped race, claiming victory with Ryan Farquhar in second place, both of whom used Dunlop’s D211GP tyres.

Tyre Strategy “Vital” as Hamilton, Button Complete McLaren

Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button completed a McLaren one-two at the Canadian Grand Prix, as tyre strategy took centre stage. Hamilton successfully deployed a super soft-medium-medium tyre strategy in Montreal. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso finished third.

Apollo Tyres Commences Lockout at Perambra Factory

In June 11 filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange, Apollo Tyres has reported the initiation of a lockout at its Perambra factory in Kerala. “With reference to the earlier announcement dated April 29, 2010, Apollo Tyres Ltd has now informed BSE that the management has declared Lock-out at company's manufacturing facility at Perambra,” stated the filing, quoting “labour unrest relating to long term settlement negotiations” as the reason for its action.

Michelin to Double PCR & LTR Capacity in Growing Markets by 2012

At an Exane BNP Paribas seminar on June 11, Michelin outlined its intention to double passenger car and light truck tyre capacity in growth regions by 2012 and to increased truck tyre capacity by 40 per cent within this timeframe. This growth will in part be facilitated by the construction of three greenfield plants – a new US$800 million truck tyre facility in India, an $800 million passenger car and truck tyre factory in China, and a passenger car tyre facility in Brazil. All three plants are anticipated to enter production in 2012.

Bridgestone Announces BT-023 Adventure Sport Bike Tyre Fitments

Bridgestone has released details of fresh bike tyre fitments in the Sport-touring segment, as the recently launched Battlax BT-023 receives approval on popular models. The BT-023 rear and BT-020 front mix has now been approved for bikes such as the BMW R1200GS and the Kawasaki KLV1000. This newly approved dual fitment allows bikers currently riding on BT-020s the option to replace rear tyres with the BT-023 when the rear BT-020 is phased out in June.

Super Singles Included in Latest Generation Goodyear Mixed Service Range

The new generation of mixed service tyres from Goodyear Dunlop Europe has been launched, and these products – the Omitrac MSS II steer tyre and MSD II drive tyre – enter the market along with the manufacturer’s claim that they will help operators save money in several ways. Amongst other qualities, Goodyear states the MSD II offers a 17 per cent greater mileage potential while both tyres offer good rolling resistance levels.

Michelin Going the Distance for Samworth Brothers

Samworth Brothers are, as Tyres & Accessories reported in February 2008, well acquainted with receiving high mileage from their Michelin tyres. Now the tyre maker reports that the chilled consolidator has clocked up more than 723,000 km on a set of Michelin XDE2+ drive axle tyres which were fitted as original equipment on a MAN TGA 26.440 6×2 tractor unit it operates. The tyres were removed at 723,417 km, with 4mm of tread remaining, and regrooved for a second life. It is expected that the regrooved tyres will cover up to an additional 180,000 km before being returned to Michelin for remoulding into Remix tyres.

Michelin to Field Longer Lasting Tyres at Le Mans

Michelin is hoping to walk away with its 13th consecutive win at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. To achieve this, the tyre maker says its engineers, chemists, developers and technicians have prepared a new line-up of even more durable tyres. Working with its partners, Michelin has focused on increasing tyre life without sacrificing performance in other areas. This year the company’s stated goal at the 24 hour race is to quadruple the length of each stint for prototypes and to double them for GT cars.

New Dealers Added to Bandag’s European Network

Bandag has added new dealers in Italy and Latvia to its European network. La Rinnova Del Pneumatico – Arké s.r.l, of Podenzano, Italy, and Juva SIA of Riga, Latvia, have both signed Bandag franchise contracts, bringing the total number of Bandag dealers in Europe to more than 140.

Analysts Raise Conti Earnings Estimate 20%

Analysts at Deutsche Bank has upgraded Continental AG’s stock rating to “buy” after raising its earnings per share (EPS) estimates by more than 20 per cent for 2010 and 2011. According to the analysts the revision is entirely attributable to better volumes: “With car production in the second quarter close to the first quarter, our new second quarter adjusted EBIT estimate is 540 million (versus 400 million euros previously) and our full year adjusted EBIT is upgraded by 13 per cent to 1.87 billion euros (consensus: 1.75 billion).” Writing in an investor’s note published on 11 June, the analysts explained that this corresponds to an EBIT margin of 8.1 per cent and to an adjusted EPS of 3.9 euros, 8 per cent above consensus.
