Pro-Align Maintains Service Through Winter with Seasonal Tyre Fitment

Leading wheel alignment specialist Pro-Align, has fitted its fleet of service and sales vehicles with winter tyres for the first time. The company says this should help maintain the high levels of support and assistance, whatever the weather this coming winter. By fitting winter tyres, Pro-Align says it aims to maintain its maximum 48-hour response times for any service breakdowns while ensuring its drivers remain safe on the road.

Bridgestone Developing Low Rubber-Content Tyres

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Bridgestone is working on technology that would radically reduce the amount of natural and synthetic rubber used in each tyre it produces – without having an impact on quality or performance. The tyre-maker hopes to have the technology, which also encompasses other tyre components, in place within ten years, effectively cutting its total rubber consumption by 50 per cent. Reducing input costs is the hot battlefield for manufacturers as they tackle fast rising oil and NR cost increases while seeing white-hot growth opportunities in South America and Asia. Recouping on those higher costs has grown more difficult because lingering poor economic conditions continue to pressure commercial and consumer customers.

China Research and Intelligence Releases Tyre Top 50 Report

Companiesandmarkets.com has announced the publishing of a new research report from China Research and Intelligence on the world’s top 50 tyre enterprises, 2010-2011. The report gives an analysis on the enterprises whose sales ranked among world's top 50 in 2009, including their operations, sales volume, development trend, and investment in China, amongst other things. The report ranks the world’s top 75 tyre enterprises in 2010 according to sales revenue relative to tyre manufacturing in 2009. The top three, somewhat unsurprisingly, remain as Bridgestone, Michelin and Goodyear, though the sales revenue of these three companies witnessed a double-digit drop on 2008 figures.

Cooper Tire Agrees British Formula 3 Extension

Cooper Tire will continue as the official control tyre supplier and title sponsor of the prestigious British F3 International Series until at least the end of the 2014 season. Cooper took over the supply and sponsorship of British F3 in 2009 from its Avon Tyres brand, which had previously been sole supplier to the series for 27 years, and now supplies the British GT Championship. The Cooper Tire British F3 International Series is widely acknowledged as one of the toughest domestic single-seater championships in the world and is a recognised route to the pinnacle of the sport for aspiring Formula 1 drivers, having produced 2009 FIA F1 World champion Jenson Button, and current F1 drivers Mark Webber, Rubens Barrichello, 2008 British F3 champion Jaime Algersuari, and newly signed Sauber driver and 2007 National Class champion Sergio Perez.

Maxxis Gains OE Accreditation from PSA

Tyre manufacturer Maxxis International has received original equipment accreditation from PSA. The company says it has developed its MA-510 tyre in conjunction with PSA specifically for the European OE market – it already complies with the European type approval standard 661/2009 – and is supplying the tyre in size 175/65R14 on the Peugeot 206+.

Sailun Hosts ITMA at Euro HQ

Having recently joined the Imported Tyre Manufacturers Association, Sailun Tyres was pleased to host the latest meeting at their European Headquarters in Birmingham. Welcoming ITMA president David Seward (managing director, Yokohama) and fellow Association members, Martin West (European managing director of Sailun Tyres) commented: “ITMA is recognised as one of the leading body of International tyre manufacturers and plays a pivotal role in representing our interests at all levels. Sailun Tyres recognise the benefits of joining such a group and are delighted to be able to host this meeting.”

Cooper Tire Expands Dakar Rally Assault for 2011

Cooper Tire will back an expanded team in the 2011 Dakar Rally as it aims to go one better than its debut attempt in the 2010 event. The Toyota Cooper Tire outfit finished second in the T2 Diesel class and 16th overall this January, but veteran Dakar pilot, Xavier Foj, is aiming to take the class victory in 2011. Spaniard Foj and his co-driver, Pablo Jaton, will once again compete for the team in a Toyota Land Cruiser KXR and they will be joined by a second duo – Spanish TV personality Jesus Calleja and co-driver, Ignacio Santamaria.

TyreSafe Roadshow to Highlight the Challenges of Illegal Tyres

Early next year TyreSafe will set its first ever industry roadshow in motion. Solihull has been chosen as the location where the event, hosted by Quentin Willson, will get underway on January 26. The British motoring authority, who has at different times presented both Top Gear and Fifth Gear, has been charged with delivering insights into the challenges the UK continues to face from defective and illegal tyres. During the roadshow TyreSafe will outline its ongoing plans to tackle the key issues linked with this problem and highlight how companies from a wide range of sectors can get involved and help save lives.

Dutch Winter Tyre Rise Points Way for UK: ATSE

While it is widely known that the UK’s winter tyres market will receive a bump this year – indeed, the question is now not whether there will be an increase in sales, but how large the increase can be, given the limitations of supply – a consensus seems to be forming that there will be room for greater future growth, given the performance of the segment in countries of similar climates. ATS Euromaster has contributed to this opinion today, stating that the results of a Dutch survey into road traffic accidents show that UK fleets would be safer if they fitted cold weather tyres. The survey by traffic psychologist Adriaan Heino revealed that cars with cold weather tyres were involved in significantly less accidents during winter than those which remained on ‘summer’ tyres.

Maxxis Highlights Off-Road Bike Strengths in MOTO Feature

Maxxis is aiming to promote its credentials as a specialist in the field of off-road motorcycle tyres through sponsoring an editorial feature in the UK consumer magazine MOTO. The tyre maker describes the eight-page article as one that “spells out everything riders need to know about tyres to get the best out of their motocross bikes.” The article, ‘Tyre 101: the ultimate guide to rubber’, appears in the November issue of the magazine and explains why the failure to select of rubber fit for the intended purpose could lower a bike’s performance and potentially ruin an otherwise perfectly good set of tyres.

Michelin Appoints Outsourced Fleet Service Provider

Following a good number of years managing the tyre maker’s in-house vehicle fleet, Michelin’s John Stack recently took the decision to retire. Rather than appointing someone else to take over the role, Michelin chose the outsourcing path and launched a competitive tender process to find a new service provider. This tender was won by Fleet Support Group (FSG), and the Wiltshire based company has now taken over management of Michelin’s 340-strong fleet and begun providing a range of vehicle related services including its occupational road risk management system.

Hillhead Announces Dates for 2012

The biennial showcase event for the quarrying, recycling and heavy construction industries, Hillhead has announced that its 2012 show will take place at Tarmac’s Hillhead Quarry, Buxton, between 19 and 21 June 2012. These dates are one week earlier than Hillhead’s usual slot in the show calendar in order to help distance the event from the build up to the 2012 Olympic Games, which open on 27 July. A new Hillhead 2012 website (www.hillhead.com) is currently under construction.

ATS Euromaster Launches Payment Card

ATS Euromaster has launched a new payment card named ‘ATS Assist’, offering a single payment option for all motoring needs, regardless of vehicle type, covering drivers for everything from tyres to fuel and windscreen replacement to vehicle rental. Individual cards available for every car, van, truck and trailer. A single weekly or monthly invoice is sent to managers detailing all transactions, vehicle by vehicle, eliminating the need for drivers to collect receipts and claim expenses, thus reducing administration. The collective online information also provides a clear fleet cost analysis, enabling businesses to identify purchasing trends and potential cost savings more readily.

ATS Euromaster Hosts Road Safety Demos for Birmingham Pupils

Over 500 children in Birmingham gained valuable experience in road safety last week, when Aston-based tyre specialist ATS Euromaster organised a series of practical demonstrations at Anderton Park School in Balsall Heath (24 November) and Coleshill Heath Junior & Infants School in Chelmsley Wood (25 November). The special lessons were arranged to support National Road Safety Week (22-28 November) and saw a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) squeeze into the playgrounds at both schools to help highlight a series of key safety messages involving stopping distances, driver reaction times and vehicle blind spots.

Allen Tsaur: 80% of Chinese Tyres Not Ready for Labelling

Despite tough external conditions Cooper Chengshan’s top line growth is said to be “progressing well” in 2010 and the firm’s “amazingly strong” domestic truck and bus tyre market growth in the first quarter of this year is a key highlight of this performance. Meanwhile the company’s passenger car tyres sales have reportedly continued on their “relatively consistent” recent trajectory. Looking forward, Cooper Asia general manager and Cooper Chengshan boss Allen Tsaur reports that the company is well prepared for the forthcoming 2012 tyre labelling legislation across all its brands.

From Cooper Chengshan’s perspective the new laws are a good thing that “drives us forward.” However, this is clearly not the case across the board in China, with Tsaur reporting that an estimated 80 per cent of tyre suppliers are not up to scratch when it comes to labelling legisaltion preparedness. Out of roughly 300 tyre manufacturers currently operating in China, only the top 30 are said to be of a “good quality” that is compatible with exports into the mature markets. Of these, only the top 10 (including Cooper Chengshan) are already set for the 2012 rules.
