Enviro breaks ground on recycling facility

After several years of planning, Scandinavian Enviro Systems’ recycling facility in Sweden took a further step towards reality yesterday with a groundbreaking ceremony at the plant site in Uddevalla. Enviro, Antin Infrastructure Partners, and Michelin finalised the investment decision for the plant just under a week earlier.
Fredrik Emilson, chief executive officer of Enviro, chairman Alf Blomqvist, and board member Peter Möller were present to mark the start of construction together with Uddevalla’s municipal councillor Martin Pettersson and Peter Karlsson, chief executive officer of property owner Fratera. With the help of an excavator, the Enviro team ensured that groundbreaking was, although symbolic, a literal one.
“It’s fantastic that we’re now underway with the construction of our first full-scale recycling plant,” states Alf Blomqvist. “This plant is our flagship and the first in an extensive European initiative where, together with Antin, we aim to recycle 1 million metric tonnes of tyres by 2030, a third of all end-of-life tyres in Europe. We are, of course, very happy on a day like today.”
Successful partnerships
Phase one of the project is expected to generate around forty jobs, but the plant’s environmental permit allows for expansion that could create additional job opportunities.
Enviro highlights the “good collaboration” it has enjoyed with its partners in the run-up to the start of construction. “Of course, many have contributed to getting us to this point, but the successful cooperation with both the municipality, property owners, and general contractors has played a very significant role in us reaching all the way,” says Emilson.
The general contractor for the construction is EBC, together with Fratera Fastigheter. Enviro expects the plant to be fully operational by 2025.
