Goodway Focuses on Pre-Cured Treads

In the last few years the European retreading market has become more and more interesting to companies from outside of Europe. It is these companies in particular that are able to hold their own against growing competition from cheap imported new tyres from the Far East, their position is at least better than that of well-established European tread and material suppliers. Their competitive advantage is lower prices combined with a high level of quality. One of these companies trying to benefit from the changing European market situation is Goodway Integrated Industries Bhd from Malaysia – retreader and manufacturer of retreading materials. As explains Paolo Borgianni, managing director of Goodway Europe, the European retreading market will continue its process of consolidation to the detriment of well-established companies and to the benefit of companies such as Goodway Europe, a company established as recently as 2005.

Eurostone from NDI –Tyres for Wet or Dry Winters

Nordisk Dæk Import AS (NDI) is a major supplier of tyres and wheels to European markets. The Danish company was established in 1970 and today its headquarters in the town of Brørup occupy more than 56,000 square metres of office and warehouse space. The company boasts a sizeable presence in its home market of Denmark – throughout the country NDI also operates nine strategically located branches and 50 company owned “Super Dæk Service” retail outlets, employing a total of approximately 750 people.

The company also produces wheels to order for industrial and agricultural applications, specialising in adapting rims to individual customer’s requirements. A third related field in which NDI operates is retreading. The company’s retreading subsidiary, Euroband, is Denmark’s largest manufacturer of retreaded tyres for trucks, buses, tractors and earthmovers. The Euroband facility is also located in Brørup.

Rösler Group Grants Another SPR License

The Rösler Group from Germany, suppliers of the Schelkmann pre-cure retreading system, claim global technological leadership with regards to the retreading of OTR tyres, in particular with regards to giant tyres. Immediately after Rösler closed a contract with an Indonesian mining company in April this year, the German group also sold a SPR license (Schelkmann Pre-cured Retreads) to yet another mining company. Recently the company also installed a new and exclusive Schelkmann retreading facility in Uzbekistan.

The license holder has just finished construction work on the workshop building, says Klaus Mühlbäck, vice president of the Rösler Group (and in this position responsible for the group’s international business) in an interview with Tyres & Accessories. All of the retreading equipment for the facility was produced in Europe and is already on its way to Uzbekistan. It will be installed there from September onwards; according to this time schedule production in the new retreading factory will start in December. The recipient firm, the newly licensed Kyselkumshina mining company, has even ordered two autoclavs – one for the retreading of small OTR tyres ranging from 25 to 33 inches and one for giant OTR tyres ranging from 49 to 57 inches. Therefore this retreading facility will be able to retread tyres of sizes up to 40.00 R57. All tyres retreaded by Kyselkumshina will be used in its own mines.

Michelin to Establish New PCR Plant in Mexico

Michelin plans to capitalise on the energetic Mexican automotive market through investing US$740 million over the next four years in the establishment of a new factory. The tyremaker will set up the plant in Silao, in the central state of Guanajuato, and production is scheduled to begin in 2010. According to Jim Micali, chairman and president of Michelin’s North America unit, the new factory will employ 1,300 staff and produce passenger car and SUV tyres for the domestic and US export markets.

“This is one of the most dynamic automotive and tyre markets in the world,” said Micali during in a ceremony with Mexican President Felipe Calderon. Numerous car manufacturers, including the US “big three”, have adopted Mexico as a low cost manufacturing base for exports to the US and other markets. Michelin said in a statement that the Guanajuanto facility is part of a $1.2 billion investment plan for the region.

Recaufair-Pneushow

Brazil’s status as one of the emerging BRIC economies is representative of a wider optimism regarding the future of South American tyre markets. The continent is already home to a number of industry players, including Pirelli, Goodyear and Bridgestone/Firestone, and at the beginning of the year Marangoni entered into an agreement with Distribuir Argentina, with the aim of expanding the company’s presence throughout South America.

The considerable potential offered by South American markets is highlighted by the continent’s largest tyre exhibition, the Recaufair-Pneushow. The event was first held in 1996 and in the ensuing 11 years has grown to become a highly valued venue in which to conduct business. In 2008 the Recaufair-Pneushow will take place in São Paulo, Brazil between May 5 and 8, and the show’s organisers anticipate an attendance of some 80 exhibitors and 10,500 domestic and international visitors. Products on display will include new and retreaded tyres, tyre repair and retreading equipment, moulds and materials, tyre servicing equipment and tools, and tyre recycling equipment.

German Reifen Exhibition Expands Into China

The Chinese tyre market is becoming ever more interesting, and not only for tyre manufacturers and wholesalers. The organisers of tyre-related exhibitions are also taking a much closer look at this – as it seems – market of boundless opportunities. This November the organisers of the “Reifen” show in Essen, Germany, are organising for the very first time an equivalent in China, the so-called “Reifen China”. The organisers from Messe Essen GmbH and the China United Rubber (Group) Corp. are hoping to host a successful premiere show in Shanghai. The annual Reifen China show will take place concurrently with the “Rubber Tech China” show, both held under the same roof. Klaus Reich, director trade fairs and exhibitions with Messe Essen GmbH, and in this function also responsible for Reifen China, explains in an interview with Tyres & Accessories why his company is taking the Reifen show to China, what the expectations for this November’s show are and what exhibitors and visitors will get in Shanghai when they come to Reifen China.

Tyre Industry Takes on the Mark Jenkins Golf Challenge

At 5.30am on the 4th of June 2007, 8 men in teams of two stepped onto the golf course to begin their challenge. This challenge was to play 90 holes of golf over 5 Championship golf courses in one day in order to raise money for Mark Jenkins who died of Sarcoma, “a cancer of the blood” in Dec 2006. Having only been married in recent years, Jenkins was only able to spend a week with his newborn son, Oliver. This made the men even more determined to succeed in their challenge.

All players took time out of their busy schedules to take part in this event, Royal Birkdale, Hillside, West Lancashire, Formby and Southport & Aindale to raise money for the Sarcoma Research Fund at Royal Marsden Hospital in London. The event was very successful at raising in the order of £10,000.

The group included Stephen Callow, 07/08 Chairman of the NTDA North West, owner of Freeway Taxi Tyres and Callow Car Care on Ormskirk Road in Liverpool. Apart from running a successful tyre retreading factory and MOT and motor vehicle repair garage, Stephen Callow says he enjoys fund raising for such events.

Michelin Buys Oliver Rubber for $69 million

Michelin North America, Inc. has announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Oliver Rubber Company, the Cooper Tire & Rubber Company tread rubber and retreading equipment subsidiary, for $69 million. The acquisition is subject to final due diligence as well as Federal Trade Commission and U.S. Department of Justice approval. Following the acquisition, Oliver will operate as a subsidiary of Michelin North America, Inc.

According to an official statement on the subject: “This acquisition will complement the manufacturing capability and service network of Oliver with that of the Michelin Retread Technologies (MRT) network, enabling Michelin to extend its reach in the growing commercial retreading market. In 2005 Michelin announced a major expansion of its tread manufacturing facility in Covington, Ga. and, earlier this month, the opening of a new manufacturing facility in Mexico.”

UK Fleet Success Keeps Bridgestone Growth Consistent

In contrast with some other premium manufacturers Bridgestone’s 2006 and first half 2007 sales both grew 1 – 2 per cent. According to Bridgestone UK’s commercial sales director, Greg Ward, the key to the company’s continued growth in the mature market is consistency and continuity. From his perspective, the recent news that the company has retained the Ryder contract for another three years is case in point. (In this instance Bridgestone beat off early competition from another competitor to retain the 10-year long working relationship it has with the Ryder fleet). “If the second half is as good as the first half, I will be delighted,” added Ward.

Most sources agree that the influence and volume of Chinese products grew during 2006, but at the same time premium manufacturers like Bridgestone appear unfazed by their rapid growth. In response to the question of increased competition from the Far East Greg Ward commented: “Chinese & Budget brands may be trialling their products on fleets, but the biggest, most professional fleets need professional service providers in addition to tyres. The Truck Point Network is a real winner in this respect.” In addition, the recent US recall situation should be take as a warning, Ward added.

Giti Tire Launches Truck Service Programme

Much has changed since Tyres & Accessories first met the then fledging Giti Tire Europe team at the 2006 Essen Show. Now, more than a year later, the staff count has doubled with the addition of some high profile executives; and sales are up 30 per cent year-on-year. When Tyres & Accessories met up with Giti Tire Europe’s UK, North & East Europe, and Russia sales director, Richard Lyons; and marketing manager Europe, Peter Foulkes, news of the Giti Assist truck service programme and the company’s new Heifei factory were top of the agenda. But these expansion plans are only the beginning, and the word is that an extensive new marketing programme is underway, with a rack full of new product releases scheduled for next year.

Bridgestone Aircraft Tyre Retreading Underway in China

A new Bridgestone retreading facility for aircraft tyres celebrated its official opening on July 26. The plant, operated by Bridgestone Aircraft Tire Co. (China) Ltd. and located in Qingdao is intended to primarily meet the tyre requirements of China’s numerous airlines. The opening of the Qingdao facility sees the global number of Bridgestone aircraft tyre retreading facilities increase to five, the others being located in Japan, the US, Belgium and Hong Kong.

Bridgestone aircraft tyre operations are rounded out by its facility for manufacturing new aircraft radials in Kurume, Japan. Production in Kurume is set to rise dramatically upon the opening of its second plant on the site, which is scheduled to begin operation during the second half of 2008. Within three years this second plant will see Bridgestone’s new aircraft radial output double.

BFNAT Adds Bandag Retread Line to OTR Offering

(Akron/Tire Review) Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire’s off-road tyre group is now selling Bandag Continuum retread materials specifically designed for OTR tyres. It is the first public integration of Bandag products into BFNAT’s commercial tyre sales efforts.

“Many OTR fleets don’t realise the value of their casings, which often are worth hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars,” said Shawn Rasey, executive director of OTR tyres for BFNAT. “Retreading them allows the fleet to further reduce its operating cost per hour.”

BFNAT said Continuum tread designs are available for conventional, low profile and foam-filled tyre casings, and 14 tread designs in 40 sizes are available for equipment used in construction, mining, logging, utility and marine port industries. Retread sizes are available ranging from 13.00-24 to 27.00-49 standard base tyres and 15.5-25 to 33.25-33 wide base tyres.

Goodyear Dunlop Invests in Next Tread Production Machinery

Next Tread, the commercial vehicle retread business of the Goodyear Dunlop group, has announced an investment in new machinery at its Wolverhampton plant. The investment in nail-hole detection equipment, which will be used on every tyre that enters the Next Tread process, is designed to ensure that Next Tread tyres are only produced using the best quality used truck and bus tyres (casings) available. This new-generation machinery is an integral part of the Next Tread Quality Assurance process and will be used on every tyre before it enters the retreading process.

Next Tread products are warranted for four years and are produced to the highest standards. Only quality casings, such as from Goodyear and Dunlop, are used to ensure the total quality of the product and its performance. The new machinery detects hole damage in the casing that may be invisible to the naked eye.

Ryder Awards Bridgestone UK & Truck Point network 3 year Contract

Ryder has awarded Bridgestone UK and its Truck Point network partners a new three-year contract. Under the arrangement, Bridgestone UK will supply new replacement and original equipment tyres, Qualitread retread truck tyres and tyre services though its national Truck Point service network.

Greg Ward, Bridgestone UK Commercial Director, said: “We are delighted that Ryder have awarded Bridgestone and Truck Point a new three year contract. We have been in partnership for over ten years and the new contract extends this even further. We share the same beliefs and hold the same values, the new contract is a great vote of confidence in our products and services.”

Goodyear Tyres Gain EPA Certification

(Akron/Tire Review) U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has certified Goodyear’s medium truck tyres featuring its Fuel Max Technology for use on SmartWay-eligible trucks. Goodyear said its medium radials with Fuel Max Technology can improve truck fuel efficiency by 4 per cent, and when used with other SmartWay-qualified components, each truck can produce savings of up to 4,000 gallons per year, or more than $11,000 annually. Goodyear’s Fuel Max line includes steer, drive and trailer tyres and retreads.

“Obviously we’re pleased that these Goodyear tyres are recognised for their fuel-efficiency by the EPA,” said Steve McClellan, vice president, commercial tyre systems. “We’ve enhanced fuel economy in our platform of line- haul tyres, so this is a win-win for our customers and the environment.”

Goodyear tyres featuring Fuel Max Technology include the Unisteel G395 LHS steer tyre, Unisteel G305 LHD drive tyre and Unisteel G316 LHT trail tyre in standard (11R22.5) and low-profile (295/75R22.5 and 285/75R24.5) sizes. Goodyear also offers UniCircle and precure retreading with Fuel Max Technology.
