BATO to Round Up Non-Compliant Tyres

Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations has notified the US National Highway Transport Safety Organisation that it intends to recall a total of some 768 non-compliant tyres imported from Japan between 2006 and February 2010. The offending items, Potenza RE050A, B390 and Turanza ER30 products, were manufactured for use on North American built vehicles intended for export markets and thus do not feature the DOT symbol and other labelling information legally required in the United States.

Shandong Linglong Reports Topping Chinese Export Chart

Using statistics gathered by the tyre branch of the China Rubber Industry Association, Shandong Linglong reports that the value of its export deliveries reached RMB 4.139 billion (£394.4 million, $606.5 million) in 2009 on the back of an export delivery volume of 12.969 million units, giving the company an export income of more than US$600 million for the second consecutive year. This is, the company says, the largest of any tyre company in China – Shandong Linglong comments that average export delivery value for the Chinese tyre industry last year was RMB 3.718 billion (£354.3 million, $544.8 million) and average export volume was 11,748,000 units. The company’s total sales revenue for both domestic and export markets was RMB 13.1 billion (£1.25 billion, $1.92 billion).

Pirelli Launches Scorpion Verde: Full Details

Ecological friendliness may not be the first characteristic one would stereotypically think of to describe sports utility vehicles, but Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli believe it has spotted an opportunity within this seeming anachronism. The company launched its new road-biased Scorpion Verde tyre, developed to meet what it perceives as the SUV market’s need for increased fuel efficiency. With more than just one eye on upcoming tyre labelling regulations, Pirelli claims that the Scorpion Verde boasts greatly improved rolling resistance from previous high performance SUV offerings, making it “the first high-performance eco tyre for vehicles with the highest environmental impact – SUVs and Crossovers.”

Goodyear Dunlop Regaining Lost UK Truck Tyre Market Share

2009 was a difficult year for the whole tyre business, but those selling commercial vehicle tyres had a particularly rough ride. With operators running fewer vehicles less often, and with the credit crunch biting at the heels of haulage companies already under pressure from sky-high fuel prices, there was considerable price pressure on premium tyre companies. As a result, last year saw the total UK truck tyre market shrink and some key changes take place in terms of market share. One key decline in unit share saw Goodyear Dunlop slip from 20 per cent in 2007 (third place) to estimated 9 per cent in 2009 (fifth place). With this in mind and in the context of the appointment of a new managing director at Tyre Fort, Tyres & Accessories visited Goodyear Dunlop’s UK headquarters for an exclusive interview with Nigel Sowerby, director commercial vehicle and off-the-road tyres.

China Produced 654 million Tyres in 2009

Chinese manufacturers produced 654.64 million tyres between January to December in 2009, up 18 per cent compared with 2008. According to data released by the China National Bureau of Statistics (CNBS), 57.19 million tyres were produced in China in December 2009, up 52 per cent compared with the year before. In addition CNBS said synthetic rubber production rose 8.7 per cent to 2.76 million tons during 2009. In December, synthetic rubber output rose 15 per cent compared with the same period last year, reaching 268 thousand tons.

Canada Looking at Truck Tyre Fuel Efficiency Labels

Natural Resources Canada is surveying Canadian truck fleets about their tyre habits, reports Tire Review, and the result may result in fuel efficiency labelling of truck tyres in that country. The government department is conducting an online study until March 31, and the Canadian Trucking Alliance has publicly asked truck fleets to cooperate.

NHTSA Calls Public Meeting on US Tyre Labelling Rules

According to Tire Review, the NHTSA is apparently nowhere near ready to unveil the final regulations for its long-planned tyre testing and labelling programme. The US agency announced it will hold a public hearing on March 26 to further define the consumer education element of the congressionally mandated programme. In advance of the hearing, the agency is seeking written comments from interested parties.

Growing Demand, Tyre Labelling Prompts Lanxess to Boost Nd-PBR Capacity

Some 20 million euros are to be invested in increasing production of Neodymium Polybutadiene (Nd-PBR) rubber at Lanxess’s sites at Dormagen in Germany, Orange (Texas), USA and Cabo in Brazil. In total, 50,000 additional tonnes of the high-performance rubber will be manufactured at the three sites once the extra capacities go on stream between the first quarter of 2011 and the first quarter of 2012.

Linglong: Tyre Labelling an Opportunity to Demonstrate Quality

Shandong Linglong Co., Ltd., president Wang Feng described tyre labelling as an opportunity in an interview with Tyres & Accessories. “Any new regulations should be fair for everyone, but they are a good thing for us [and therefore Infinity] because it means we won't have low quality product coming out of China. It also means that we can demonstrate that our products are good…We are confident it will result in better quality tyres for European customers.” Surrender Khandari echoed these sentiments, putting it like this: the result will be “more safe, more healthy, more green tyres for the customer [tyres] that narrow the gap with the best players.”

Shandong Linglong to Invest $200 million in China Proving Ground

Shandong Linglong Tyre Co., Ltd., the third largest tyre manufacturer in China and approximately number 16 in the world, has announced plans to invest $200 million in the construction of a “world class” proving ground in China. Company president Mr Wang Feng told Tyres & Accessories the investment will be spread over four years and will take the form of a three phase plan, beginning with passenger car tyre testing facilities when the proposed proving ground opens in 2012, and expanding to include truck and OTR testing facilities by the time it is completed in 2016. Currently the company is in the process of getting the necessary government approvals for its proposed plot of land, but Mr Wang said the company plans to be in a position to announce the further details at the end of the first half of this year. And the new facility will be a “First class proving ground in terms of size and quality,”he explained. Considering the relatively low cost of land in China, company representatives highlighted the fact that money it plans to invest in the new site will go a long way. Linglong's proposed investment equates to roughly 10 per cent of a year's turnover ($1.79 billion in 2009; over $2 billion expected in 2010) spread over four years.

During a presentation at the Geneva Motor Show, Goodyear Dunlop’s Michel Rzonzef referred to recent societal changes and evolving consumer needs as an “opportunity for companies like Goodyear Dunlop to do what we have been doing over the last one hundred years, to be at the forefront of the industry, to drive innovation and drive change.” This innovation and change, the EMEA business unit’s president for Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa said, will come through the development and introduction of new products that focus on two key areas.

Goodyear EfficentGrip Receives Low Rolling Resistance Treatment

“As a company, we lead the industry with forward-looking tyre technologies that contribute to greater road safety and reduce the impact on the environment.” These words of confidence came from Goodyear Dunlop Tires Europe president Arthur de Bok, who was commenting on the company’s presence at the Geneva Motor Show and the innovations the company is highlighting there.

FuelMax Technology Awarded by Luxembourg Business Federation

Goodyear reports that its FuelMax Technology for truck tyres came out a winner at awards held by the Luxembourg Business Federation (FEDIL). The federation bestowed its 2009 Environmental Award upon Goodyear, recognising the environmental and cost related benefits FuelMax Technology delivers. According to Goodyear, the judging panel concluded that the development of products featuring new technology proves the importance of research efforts at Luxembourg based sites, such as Goodyear's Innovation Center.

E-Tailers and Autocentres are on the Up

What will the tyre retail business look like in five years time? Who knows. As I have learnt to my peril in this column, prognostication is a dangerous business. Let’s not recall how last year I wrote “unless there is an unlikely stay of execution” regarding the implementation of s-marking regulations (see T&A’s August 2009 issue for more on this). But I digress.

The news at the end of February that Halfords bought Nationwide Autocentres for £73.2 million (see page 14 for complete coverage) says something about how tyre retail is evolving. Along with the purchase announcement came plans to rebrand the chain and the affirmation of existing plans to double the number of branches to 424. When you consider that the second largest tyre retail chain in the country, ATS Euromaster, reported that it was “reviewing” up to 80 of its 456 branches last September, it is clear that size gap between chains at the top of the two sectors is narrowing. True, Autocentres don’t focus on tyre sales like the traditional outlets do, but there are signs they are considering how to increase their focus in this area.
