HSE Warns Tyre Fitters

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is urging all employers involved in tyre servicing to assess the risks associated with changing OTR/earthmover tyres. The announcement follows a fatal accident, near Sandwich, Kent, on 27 January, which occurred during the repair of a puncture on a 1.5 metre diameter EM tyre. Kent Police and the HSE are continuing the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.

The HSE is encouraging businesses to ensure that employees are “properly trained and competent to undertake such work.” According to the HSE there are two main hazards that can arise during tyre inflation: The violent separation of the component parts of the wheel, or an air blast from a ruptured or burst tyre.

Taking the Strain

Current health and safety guidance means tyre businesses are well advised to investigate what options are available to them. And, in terms of the safety benefits, there aren’t many options better than automatic lifting equipment. Following the NTDA’s attempts to raise the profile of this issue through the introduction of a manual handling guide, Tyres & Accessories investigates the issues and explores what equipment is available. In addition to tyre lifting equipment, this feature will cover all the lifting equipment that tyre dealers need.

MOT Computerisation – Has it Been Successful?

VOSA says the MOT Computerisation roll out is proceeding successfully. It may be for them, but is it a success for the industry that provide employment for 35,000 testers and all the other people involved?

I have been involved in MOT testing for 30 years and have, for the last 20 years been operating a “high volume” testing station. Consequently I have followed the MOT computerisation programme closely since the project was first announced. At every VOSA seminar attended we, the delegates, have always been told the system would be totally tried and tested before going “live” and would never shut down because two separate computer systems would operate to ensure the system runs 24/7.
