The Motor Industry Research Association has conducted further tests that highlight the importance of adequate tread depth on vehicle tyres. Independent braking tests were carried out to measure stopping distances and cornering performance of car tyres on wet road surfaces. According to the safety body the results showed “conclusively” that both stopping distances and cornering performance “noticeably deteriorated well before the end of a tyre’s life.”

Michelin has invested in a wind turbine electricity system at its Dundee facility. Two giant turbines, each 400 ft high will be operational as of next February and will provide around a third of the factory’s annual power demands. In a company statement the manufacturer announced that contracts are being finalised with the developer, Ecotricity, and installation will begin within the next few months. The new turbines will generate 8 million kwh of power.

Bridgestone UK has appointed Tim Dougherty as Trade Sales Manager (North). He has spent his career in the tyre industry, working for a truck rental company and spending eight years as Bridgestones area sales manager in the Midlands. Reporting to head of truck sales Julie Plumb, Mr. Dougherty will manage a team of five salesmen and will be responsible for all Bridgestones truck and bus tyre sales in the northern half of the UK.

After 36 years in Fayetteville, Kelly-Springfield Tire Co is changing its name. The company is assuming the name of its parent company - Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co - as Goodyear tries to unify its image. The 111-year-old company employs more than 2,650 people at the Fayetteville plant, which is reported to be one of the largest tyre manufacturing facilities in the world, producing 55,000 tyres per day. Kelly-Springfield was purchased by Goodyear in 1935 and operated as a wholly owned subsidiary until 1996, when it was fully merged with Goodyear.

When Tyres & Accessories last wrote about the pressures facing wholesalers, the issues pressing the business were not too dissimilar to what there are today. Then raw material price increases at the manufacturer level, not to mention high oil prices, were in danger of effecting wholesale pricing policies. Today oil prices (affecting both raw material and transportation costs) are almost 50 per cent higher, and almost all manufacturers have raised their product prices at least once if not twice this year.
