When Federal Tyre returns to the Reifen show in Germany this June, the Taiwanese manufacturer will showcase its Himalaya ICEO winter tyre, which is aimed at consumers in Northern Europe, Russia/CIS and Japan. Sizes initially on offer range from 155/70R13 through to 245/45R18, and Federal says the range will continue to be expanded throughout the rest of the year.
On 4 May, the Triangle Group and the Harbin Institute of Technology signed a strategic cooperation agreement for the development of radial aircraft tyre technology. The agreement was signed at Triangle’s headquarters in Shandong Province by company chairman Ding Yuhua and Feng Ji from the Harbin Institute of Technology. Under the terms of the agreement, the two entities will set up a facility that draws upon the Weihai-based institute’s expertise in the areas of composite materials, engineering mechanics, automotive, mechanical design and manufacturing and information management professions and disciplines. Research will focus on developing tyres for larger aircraft, such as commercial airliners.
World speed records for passenger cars may be approaching the 250mph or 400km/h range, but it is possible to be a record breaker at more modest speeds. Bridgestone reports a Volvo wheel loader fitted with its VHS tyres has broken 103 km/h, creating a new world speed record for this type of vehicle.
Continental has introduced a road legal track day tyre into the UK, and the company says this latest product sets a new benchmark for high performance cars. The tyre is the ContiForceContact, which visitors to February’s Geneva Motor Show may have seen fitted to the Conti-liveried Artega GT sports car that competed in last year’s Nürburgring 24-hour race. The ContiForceContact is the German manufacturer’s first road legal track day tyre.
Infinity Tyres’ truck products were recently displayed at the Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC, Birmingham. The manufacturer said that the brand’s presence on the stand was a measure of its support of the UK market and its authorised UK and Northern Ireland dealer, RH Claydon. Infinity also said the show is widely recognised as a premier meeting place for British and European transport, distribution and logistics businesses.

Michelin has launched a dedicated truck tyre labelling information module on its website. The site aims to present all the information fleet operators need to know about the legislation, including why it is being introduced, what tyres it covers, an overview of the different rating criteria and what benefits it offers fleets. Sharn Samra, Michelin’s head of truck & bus marketing in the UK and Ireland, explains: “The introduction of tyre labelling is a big step for the industry and will act as an important decision-making tool for fleets. Naturally, Michelin is keen to support any initiative which will improve the overall quality of tyres on the market.”
Philippa Oldham, head of transport and manufacturing at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, welcomed Vauxhall’s decision on the new Astra production. “This is welcome news for Merseyside, and for UK manufacturing as a whole. The UK car manufacturing industry is seeing a much needed renaissance, leading to the UK’s first trade surplus since the 70s.”
Following the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association report on passenger car registrations, market research company JATO Dynamic has added its new car sales analysis for the region. The headline figures are declines of 6.1 per cent in April, the lowest monthly decline of the year so far, and 7.1 per cent in year-to-date compared to 2011. Focusing more on the top ten brands, JATO explained that Renault and Opel/Vauxhall experienced the largest fall in sales during April of 16.9 and 16.1 per cent respectively, while Volkswagen maintains top position, ahead of Ford.
Kwik Fit has announced that it will take on 320 apprentices in 2012, more than double the company’s intake of 120 in 2011. The firm will offer the two year schemes to 16-18 year olds in locations throughout the UK. The announcement coincided with the visit of David Way, chief executive of the National Apprenticeship Service, to the company’s Training Academy in Derby. Way said the company’s commitment to its apprenticeship programme, ranked as “outstanding” by Ofsted, was “very impressive”.
Vauxhall has confirmed that production of its new Astra model will take place at its Ellesmere Port, Cheshire manufacturing plant – the lead plant of two in Europe building the model. The decision was made after Vauxhall’s workforce signed a new labour agreement, commencing in 2013, on Wednesday 16 May. The facility agreed to implement a number of creative operating solutions to improve flexibility and reduce fixed costs, making it one of the most competitive in the Vauxhall/Opel manufacturing network. The agreement will run into early next decade, through the projected lifespan of the next-generation Astra.
Following research by Motor Wheel Service last month that showed commercial wheels sustaining undetected damage when fitted to non-standard hubs, the Department for Transport has stated that it will undertake independent testing to verify the company’s findings. The initial investigation, carried out on an LBF machine by one of the world’s leading CV wheel experts, Dr Sundararajan of Wheels India, found that non-circumferential hubs, which give only partial contact between axle and wheel, are causing untested load stresses which cause cracks and half life expectancy. MWS, the worldwide distributor of Wheels India’s xlite truck wheels, has campaigned extensively over the past few years for increased safety checks, maintaining that there is also a problem with used take-off wheels entering the market without mandatory safety checks.
Kings Road Tyres’ group credit control manager, Barry Hill, recently celebrated the achievement of completing 40 years unbroken service with the company. Hill joined KRT at the Southampton location in 1972 and spent 34 years at the centre before a career change saw him appointed as group credit control manager based in Hayes in 2006.
Toyo Proxes R36 tyres have been chosen as original equipment for the new Mazda CX-5 compact SUV. The 225/55 R19 99V Proxes R36 are said to complement the Skyactiv technology introduced on the Mazda CX-5. Skyactiv technology, which is described as a combination of pleasure, efficiency and safety, reportedly offers enhanced handling and stability, greater fuel economy and lower emissions.
Trelleborg Wheel Systems has added two new sizes to its TM100 tyre range designed for row-crop applications – the 380/90R50 151A8 (151B) and 380/90R54 158A8 (158B). As a result the Trelleborg TM100 range is now available in 11 sizes from 32 to 54 inches.
