Aftermarket exhibition AutoExCeL 2005 has been cancelled. The show, scheduled to run at London’s Docklands next April does not give clear reasons for cancelling the event, and has said: “Having failed to persuade our fellow organisers to agree a rationalised event calendar, we have decided, with great reluctance and disappointment to cancel AutoExCeL 2005.”
The American Le Mans Series (ALMS) season-ending race, the Audi Sports Car Championships at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was provided an eventful climax to the season. It was a longer event (4 hours instead of the previous 2 hour 45 minute format) and it was a race that finished in darkness for the first time. It even offered up a smattering of rain during the last hour just to keep the teams and tyres on their toes. But through it all, the consistent driving of Clint Field, Robin Liddell and Rick Sutherland resulted in another P2 class victory for the Pirelli-sponsored Intersport Racing Lola/Judd, the sixth in the nine race series for Intersport, the 7th overall P2 class win for Pirelli and a first place for Pirelli in the coveted ALMS Tire Manufacturers’ Championship in P2.
Sebastién Loeb has become the World Rally Champion following his second place classification in this weekend’s Tour de Course, the French Rally. The win makes him the 10th driver in the sport’s history to take the title on Michelin tyres. The result was also good news for Citroën, which runs Xsara WRC cars for both Loeb and team mate Carlos Sainz, has retained its title as world manufacturer champions.

The European Commission looks likely to approve the take-over of the German automotive supplier Phoenix AG by competitor Continental “on conditions.“ Although the Commission has not made its decision official, the German newspaper Die Welt quotes informed sources. According to the newspaper, Continental had to agree to “small concessions” that the management had generally expected. “We’ve made small concessions (to the EU) and we’re confident that with this step the deal now will go through,” said Continental chairman, Manfred Wennemer. The EU insisted on the compromise because of the companies’ overlapping product portfolios. No further details of the concessions have been given. The Commission will officially announce its decision in two weeks time.

New motorcycle registration figures released by the MCI, show falling numbers across the board. In the first nine months of the year, 29 per cent less scooters and 10 per cent fewer motorcycles and mopeds were registered than during the same period in 2003. In total the year-to-date figures show a 17 per cent drop.
When the month of September is examined in isolation, the opposite is true. Last month there were roughly 500 more motorocycle, moped and scooter registrations than in Septmeber 2003. This represents a nine per cent increase in scooter registrations, a five per cent increase motorbike and moped registrations and seven per cent total rise in registrations.

Bridgestone has made a momentous move by becoming an exhibitor at the Ferrari Museum. The manufacturer’s tyres, which fit both Ferrari’s sports cars and Formula One tracing teams, are now be on display in the Italian city of Maranello.
The Potenza RE050 Scuderia tyre developed for the Enzo Ferrari will be exhibited at the museum along with one of the very tyres that Michael Schumacher used in the F1 Japan Grand Prix in 2003. The tyres will be on display until 24 August 2007 for some 200,000 people that visit the museum annually.
Goodyear has received an award at the American Point-of-Purchase Show for the “creative merchandising and selling tools” that it used to support its line of Assurance tyres.

Dunlop has launched a new tyre for the BTCC in 2005. The tyre will be made from the same compound and in the same size as those currently in use but will feature a stronger construction.
Iveco’s third annual Women in Transport Awards has recognised the achievements of three women working in the UK road transport industry.
The BRMA and ITMA have joined together to set up a new federal body to represent the interests of both associations’ tyre manufacturing members. The new Tyre Industry Federation will come into force as of 1 January 2005 and will take the form of a limited company. The BRMA are describing the union as “formalising the already close working relationship that already exists between them.”
