Kwik-Fit has appointed Paul House as trading director responsible for the company’s commercial, buying and supply chain activities. He reports directly to CEO, Ian Fraser. Paul House’s initial focus will be to develop new trading strategies for the UK business and to leverage buying synergies amongst other Kwik-Fit Group companies. He will also be tasked with extracting greater value from the company’s supply chain.
As part of its continuing size updating programme, Interstate Tires is introducing two new popular sizes. From December 2006 Interstate Sport IXT-1 will be available in 225/55R16 RF (reinforced) 99W, while the Interstate Sport IXT-1 will also come in 235/45R17 RF 97W. The Sport IXT-1 is described as an Ultra High Performance tyre with a directional pattern. The Sport IXT-1 boasts a special performance compound and tread pattern, for “incredible road holding in all conditions, especially in wet.” The programme runs from 13 to 18 inches and is available up to W-speed-rating and lots of XL load indexes.
Sapphire Energy Recovery has recently appointed a dedicated health and safety officer to strengthen their service team. Andy Jones has been appointed as Environment, Health, Safety and Co-ordinator and will oversee operations at all of Sapphire’s seven tyre processing facilities.
Announcing the appointment, Sapphire’s managing director, Tim Stott said: “As part both the Lafarge group and Michelin, we place a great emphasis on the health and safety of all our employees as well as visitors, drivers and contractors on our sites.”
Michelin has won a tyre contract with London Central, a division of the Go-Ahead Group, which operates 600 buses in south east and central London from depots in Bexleyheath, Camberwell, New Cross and Peckham. The contract sees London Central switch to a three year ‘pence per mile’ contract, similar to the agreement Michelin already has with London General, a separate division of the Go-Ahead Group, comprising a fleet of 700 vehicles in south west and central London.
Building on its reputation for van tyres, Maxxis is expanding its UK product portfolio with a range of light truck tyres designed to meet the needs of operators who want quality at an affordable price. “We have gained invaluable experience in the LCV sector during the past few years and are now utilising leading edge tyre technology to satisfy the requirements of the UK’s light truck market,” says Derek McMartin, managing director of Maxxis International UK plc.

(Akron/Tire Review) Alcoa Forged Specialty Wheels has expanded its product warranty to a lifetime-limited warranty covering all of its automotive aftermarket wheels. The new warranty program went into effect 1 September. Under the extended warranty, Alcoa said the warranty covers the life of the wheel against defects in materials or workmanship, and will repair or replace a defective product that fails in normal use and service.
(Akron/Tire Review) Titan International has signed a five-year deal to supply wheels and tyres to Grove US, maker of mobile hydraulic, truck mounted and industrial cranes. Under the deal, Titan will supply General branded OTR tyres to Grove. “Titan is happy to partner with Grove, a company known for strong, reliable lifting solutions, in this long-term commitment,” said Titan Chairman and CEO Morry Taylor. “The General OTR tyre brand is a leader in the crane industry, and Titan’s wheels are the best in the business. Grove’s customers will benefit from quality equipment, paired with leading American-made Titan assemblies.”
(Akron/Tire Review) Yokohama Tire Corp. has “initiated legal proceedings against several tyre companies,” including Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co., Ltd. (China), Tireco Inc. (USA), Cooper Tire & Rubber (USA), Guizhou Tire Co. Ltd. (China) and Greenball Corp. (USA). claiming infringement of Yokohama tyre patents. Yokohama said it filed suit in Los Angeles federal court on 1 September for patent infringement against Hangzhou and Tireco for unauthorized use of the patented Geolandar A/T+II tread design. At the same time, Yokohama has demanded that Cooper cease infringing the patent protecting the tread design of Yokohama’s AVS dB S2 tyre.

Former Continental Tire workers and their allies rallied in uptown Charlotte, North Carolina, after the annual Labour Day Parade on 4 September. They were protesting layoffs and free-trade agreements that harm workers. And they demanded a living wage of at least $10 an hour in Charlotte. According to local, pro-union news sources, the workers vowed to continue their fight for good jobs at living wages.
(Akron/Tire Review) In an interesting twist to the current round of master contract talks, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has told the United Steelworkers that it wants the union to reach a deal with Bridgestone/Firestone before it will continue negotiations. It was expected that talks between Goodyear and the USW were further along than those between the union and Bridgestone/Firestone, and that the union’s talks with Bridgestone/Firestone would be more difficult.
Maywood Equipment Group has doubled the size of its warehouse in Maidstone to cope with the increasing demand for its products. Managing director, Trevor Homeward explains: “When the unit next-door became available, we jumped at it immediately. As our business has expanded we have been struggling with our existing space and office accommodation. We were looking at moving to larger premises when this unit became available – the timing was dead lucky. We are now able to show our customers any of our lifts and this is particularly important for parking lifts and some of the more expensive platform and scissor lifts. We have had our first group of visitors who arrived just as the decorators were leaving site!”
The head of one of the UK’s leading specialist rubber recycling companies says there should be more recognition for the contribution such firms make to protecting the environment, conserving natural resources, creating jobs and boosting exports. Michael Hopkinson, chairman of Rosehill Polymers of Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire, says that dealing with the UK’s huge amount of waste rubber is a growing problem which needs to be addressed urgently at government level. Rosehill Polymers, established nearly 30 years ago, utilises around 3,600 tonnes of recycled tyre rubber annually most of which is converted into products for the rail industry by a system which incorporates Rosehill’s own Flexilon polyurethane binder formulation.
