Continental AG has outlined plans to broaden their pool of fresh talent by hiring 1,300 university graduates and young professionals this year. According to the Company’s human resources director and executive board member Thomas Sattelberger, Continental is seeking those with engineering and science degrees as well as economics and business administration graduates.
Old tyres that once drove along city streets are now on the receiving end of a different kind of traffic. As part of a pilot programme, the city of Chicago has replaced 170 metres (550 feet) of concrete footpath with a surface made from recycled rubber tyres.
City officials say that they want to see how this new material stands up to heavy foot traffic and the severe winters experienced in that part of the US. The experimental rubber footpaths cost more than those made of concrete, but they are made of 100 per cent recycled tyres and don’t crack the way concrete does. The rubber surface can be easily repaired or removed.
In these parts Trelleborg is best known for their agricultural and industrial tyres, but Trelleborg Wheel Systems is just one small spoke in the Trelleborg Wheel. The company Trelleborg AB is represented in 40 countries and employs approximately 23,000 people.
With 2006 proving to be a tough year for the North American tyre industry, Continental AG Chief Executive Manfred Wennemer believes that things look set to improve in 2007.
Speaking to media at the North American International Auto Show, he pointed towards declining raw material costs, a potential upswing in replacement demand and reduced operating costs as signs of better times. “I am convinced 2007 will be a good tyre year” said Wennemer. “We do see there is some demand for the market that was not satisfied in 2006.”
Continental AG and Microsoft Corp have announced the formation of a strategic partnership between the two organisations in order to develop wireless technology for vehicles.
The companies are in the process of creating devices that will allow electronics such as mobile phones and MP3 players to connect wirelessly to a vehicles’ audio system, and they will begin supplying this technology to Ford later in 2007.
The value of the Ford contract has not been disclosed.
Pirelli Tyre SpA, Europe’s third-biggest tyremaker, has arranged a line of credit worth 500 million euros (£337 million) in an attempt to improve the company’s financial structure and boost flexibility. The Italian banks NP Paribas and Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena SpA have been hired as lead arrangers to organise the five-year multi-currency credit line. This new credit line is larger than any previous funding, a reflection of the tyre unit’s increased independence from the greater Pirelli group.
(Akron/Tire Review) Michelin Aircraft Tire Co. has been awarded a 10-year, $700 million-plus contract to supply tires to the U.S. military. Michelin officials said it was the company’s single largest contract ever.
Under the Defense Department Tire Privatization Initiative, Michelin will handle the wholesale supply, storage and distribution for all aircraft tires used by the U.S. military.
Having already committed itself to closing plants in the US, Canada, UK and New Zealand, Goodyear tire & Rubber Co has announced its intention to close its manufacturing facility in Casablanca, Morocco, by the end of 2007. Approximately 150 jobs will be cut as a result of the closure.

The number of motor traders failing during 2006 reached its highest point at 303 for more than a decade, an increase of 7.1 per cent compared to 2005. The industry had seen a poor start to the year with the number of business failures in the automotive industry increasing by 67.9 per cent, according to Experian. Parker Hannifin has supplied its TyreSaver nitrogen generator technology to Nexa Racing, the Formula BMW UK Champions. According to the company, the TyreSaver units are enabling the team to fill their tyres with nitrogen efficiently within particularly demanding timescales, significantly improving their control over their performance on the race track. The Nexa team entered the Formula BMW UK Championship in 2005, going on to win the competition last year.
