BFGoodrich to Become OE for Humvee

Michelin-owned tyremaker BFGoodrich will soon equip the US military’s Humvee vehicle with its Baja T/A tyre after being awarded a US$10.7 million contract. The Baja T/A to be fitted to the Humvee has been developed especially for military use and carries an E Load Rating with a load capacity of 4,540 pounds per tyre at 65 psi (4.4 bar). According to Michelin, the new tyre has a 22.5 per cent increase in projected tread life compared to the previous Humvee tyre, as well as superior manoeuverability and mud traction.

SmarTire Announces Restructuring and UK Closure

SmarTire Systems Inc. has given details of restructuring plans that involve the closure of its UK operations. Company president and CEO Dave Warkentin announced, “We have taken significant actions to reduce costs. Since September, our overall staff level has been reduced by approximately 50%. As part of this initiative, we plan to close our UK facility at the end of February, 2007. We do not anticipate that this closure will affect our European sales efforts.”

JK Industries to Double OTR Production

JK Industries Ltd. plans to invest up to 1.2 billion rupees (£13.9 million) doubling production of OTR tyres over the next 18 months, according a senior official from the company. This decision is a logical one for the tyremaker, owing to the fact that the net profit margin for the OTR segment is 6 per cent, nearly three times that of truck and passenger car tyres.

Michelin Renews International Contract

On January 26 Michelin renewed a long-term global contract with the Volvo Group. The initial contract was signed in December 2003, and under the terms of the new contract Michelin will offer truck tyres as OE for vehicles assembled by Volvo in Europe, North America and South America under the brand names Volvo Trucks, Volvo Buses, Renault Trucks and Mack Trucks.

No, it’s not a new type of run-flat technology. A Texas man has found himself in prison after his customised tyre inners fell foul of the law. The man was stopped by police in Warren County, Kentucky after being previously observed weaving and driving too slowly while heading north on interstate 65.

And a New CEO for Goodyear South Pacific Tyre

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has announced the appointment of Judith Swales to the position of managing director and chief executive officer of its Australian-based South Pacific Tyres (SPT) business. Swales replaces Joe Copeland, who has been named vice president of Goodyear’s Global Off-Highway business based in Akron.

Two New Appointments for Goodyear North America

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has appointed Charles “Chuck” Mick to the newly created position of vice president and general manager, North American holdings and integration. Prior to taking on this position Mick had served since 2003 as vice president and general manager of the company’s Global Off-Highway tyre business.

Easyloader – It Does What It Says

The versatility of utility, pickup and 4×4 vehicles can be increased, following the introduction of a new version of the Easyloader Tail Lift from Penny Hydraulics, which can handle loads up to 550kg. Using a tail lift for loading and unloading enables operators to comply with manual handling regulations as well as reducing the risk of damage to vehicles and personnel.

Marangoni Expanding South American Presence

(Akron/Tire Review) Marangoni Group has entered a “partnership” with Distribuir Argentina in a move to consolidate and grow Marangoni’s activities in South America. Marangoni operates Marangoni do Brasil, a retread product manufacturing and sales business in Brazil.

Bandag Purchase Approved

Bridgestone Americas Holding Inc.’s US$1 billion acquisition of Bandag Inc. has received early approval from the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC ended a required 30-day waiting period for the acquisition ahead of schedule, on January 29, announced Bandag in a prepared statement. The 30-day period was not scheduled to end until February 8.

Amtel-Vredestein Denies Breakdown of Continental Talks

The Russian-Dutch tyremaker Amtel-Vredestein has refuted claims that talks with Continental AG on a possible collaboration have broken down. Rumours have been circulating that the German company had decided to end negotiations, and the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper quoted a Continental supervisory board member as saying “The deal has died for now.”

Officials Challenge Polluting Tyremaker

Deputies from the people’s congress in the Chinese city of Guangzhou have asked officials from the city’s Environmental Protection Bureau why no action has been taken to deal with the large amount of pollution caused by a state-owned tyremaker located in the city. South China Tire & Rubber, one of the country’s largest tyre suppliers, reportedly emits large quantities of sulphurous gas from its factory, and this is claimed to affect the health of an estimated 100,000 people.
