Tyre Blow Out Causes Chicken Massacre
A tyre blow out caused the fire which killed 7000 chickens near Magherafelt, Northern Ireland on 25 September 2008. According to the Mid-Ulster Mail, the accident was the largest loss of life among livestock in Northern Ireland for many years. A major clean-up followed which lasted for most of the day.
The USPCA’s David Wilson commended the swift action of the emergency services: “The USPCA commends our colleagues in Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service for their efforts to contain the blaze and limit the losses. Whilst there were no survivors, their intervention relieved the suffering of many trapped birds,” he said. DUP MLA Ian McCrea added: “It was unfortunate that so many chickens were killed in this accident however I commend the quick action of the emergency services in ensuring that their suffering was minimal.”
