US Tyre Shipments Continue to Fall
US tyre shipments have fallen in almost every segment in the first nine months of 2006. As a result the total market fell 5.6 per cent to 228.1 million units. US OE shipments fell 7.5 per cent to 46.1 million units in the first three quarters, while replacement shipments slipped 5.1 per cent to 181.9 million units.
OE sales to US consumer vehicle makers were worst hit on the back of poor vehicle sales. In the nine months ended September 36.5 million, passenger car units shipped as OE sales were 9.1 per cent down from the same period in 2005. Light truck OE sales were similarly badly hit, falling 8.4 per cent to 4.6 million units. The only positive figure was in the truck tyre OE segment where shipments increased 7.1 per cent to 5.1 million units.
