94% of Dealers Pay Tyre Collectors 51p – £1

Following suggestions that tyre dealers have been profiteering from the green fee they charge customers for worn tyre disposal, the NTDA has released survey results that are said to counter that position. One key criticism levelled against the retail trade was that they are paying recovery agents as little as 47p per car tyre, so one question on the survey asked how much members were paying. 94 per cent said they were paying between 51p and £1.00.

On the subject of green fee charges, 86 per cent of member respondents itemised the charge as a separate item on the invoice. Most internet sites charge £1.50 for disposal. Of those who did make a charge, 43 per cent charged the motorist between 50p and £1, 47 per cent charged between £1.01 and £1.50 and the remaining 10 per cent charged over £1.50. However, Tyrepress.com’s own anecdotal Question of the Month data suggests that there is still some feeling amongst readers that the green fee is too low.

Question of the Month Focuses on “Green Fee” Debate

Tyrepress.com is carrying a new Question of the Month on the homepage, dealing with one of the most controversial issues of the day: the size of the current “green fee” charged by retailers to pay for the costs of disposing of old tyres. At the nub of the issue is that collectors and recyclers believe a larger part of the green fee should be coming there way. While certain sources have pointed an accusative finger at tyre retailers, suggesting that they may be profiteering from the current fee charged to customers at the expense of tyre recovery companies, the National Tyre Distributors Association defended the position of its members by suggesting that overheads such as tyre storage costs had been underestimated in this argument. Tyrepress.com asks readers if the current Green Fee – estimated to be around £1.50 – the right price. Have your say in the debate by clicking your chosen answer and adding your comments to the forum, accessed in the top right hand corner of the homepage.

S-mark Enforcement to Begin on 23 March 2010

Enforcement of the European s-mark legislation that took effect in October 2009 is set to begin in the UK on 23 March. From this date onwards anyone selling tyres not in compliance with Directive 2001/43 (in other words non s-marked tyres) will be subject to the consequences of a statutory instrument signed off by Department for Transport minister Sadiq Khan on 10 February. BTMA chief executive, Graham Willson, told Tyres & Accessories that this approved text will now be laid before parliament and, unless there is an adverse reaction from parliament – something that is considered unlikely, the statutory instrument completing the implementation of directive 2001/43 will become effective on 23 March 2010.

Some industry observers see the time before this as the last chance saloon for anyone who has been clearing stocks of non-compliant tyres, with the Vehicle Certification Agency and Trading Standards are expected to be vigorously enforcing the new law, with penalty fines of up to £5,000 a tyre for those caught selling non-compliant products after 23 March.

Brityrex 2010 Offering Chinese Manufacturers a Door to UK Market

The introduction of tariffs and other protective measures in the US has to an extent closed the door to affordable Chinese tyres there, and this is good news to European consumers with an interest in value for money. Many Chinese companies have identified this opportunity to further develop their businesses in our region, and a number of them have turned to Brityrex 2010 as a platform from which they can effectively do so. Exhibition organiser ECI International reports, as of mid-November, having taken no less than 25 stand bookings from Chinese suppliers, with the prospect of more to follow.

And what’s more “Health and Safety in Motor Vehicle Repair and Associated Industries” can be downloaded for free from the HSE website.

Tyre fitters specifically have the extra challenges of run-flats and increasingly large and low profile tyres to keep them occupied. As beneficial as these developments have been to the look and performance of our vehicles, the HSE points out each that of these technologies has also brought new health and safety challenges in an industry already dealing with many serious issues. In the last five years alone there have been over 8000 injuries and 25 deaths in the MVR sector.
