Bridgestone Shows Multi Chamber Tyre Concept

(Akron/Tire Review) Bridgestone Corp has revealed a new tyre concept, a multi air chamber tyre, which has three separate chambers acting as pressure vessels.
Bridgestone said the concept “was born from extensive R&D efforts with a view to the future of tyres.”

The multi-chamber tyre consists of a main chamber in the center and sub-chambers on both sides. The air pressure in each of the chambers can be controlled independently, making it possible to adjust the stiffness balance between the tread area and the individual sidewalls, Bridgestone said.

Conti to Raise Europe Tyre Prices

(Akron/Tire Review) Continental AG plans to increase tyre prices in Europe by 3 per cent to 6 per cent this spring, although an exact effective date has not been revealed. Continental chief executive Manfred Wennemer told media sources of the price increase plan during the Geneva auto show. Wennemer told AFX that Continental’s troubled US tyre operations could break even in 2006, but that it will depend largely on the outcome of its restructuring plans for its Charlotte, North Carolina plant.

ATS Rejoins NTDA

ATS Euromaster, the Michelin equity network of over 500 depots, has rejoined the NTDA after a period of six years. Commenting on the move ATS Euromaster Group managing director Nick Gregg said: “We look forward to rejoining NTDA after more than six years and we will endeavour to play an active role in the important work that the Association is engaged in on behalf of the trade in the UK”.

Cooper Posts Loss for 2005

(Akron/Tire Review) Citing a number of factors, Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. posted a net loss of $9 million for 2005, down considerably from 2004’s net profit of $201 million. The loss came against full-year sales of $2.2 billion, which was up 4 per cent vs. 2004’s sales of $2.1 billion.

Cooper said the 2005 loss was due to a combination of rising raw material costs, lower unit sales, plant inefficiencies and the impact of the strike at its Texarkana, Arkansas, plant last year. Improved pricing and product mix helped boost overall sales, Cooper said.

Report: Baled Tyres Provide Good Foundation for Civil Engineering

Baled tyres can play an important role in large civil engineering projects, research from Onyx Environmental Trust has found. The study focused on the use of bales made up of 100 tyres compressed together and tied with metal wires. Developed initially in the US as a tyre storage method, the system has now been adapted with a tyre bale for construction – the Used Rubber Recycling Operation.

Get it Right With Goodyear

It is received wisdom that the vast majority of 4×4 vehicles never leave the tarmac, let alone spend weekends up to their axles in mud, yet image is still very important. Drivers like their vehicles to look as though they could tackle Mt. Everest on a winter’s day, even if their most taxing journey is the school run.

Tyres play an important part in this image creation – aggressive, knobbly tyres certainly look the part but, says Goodyear, fitting these tyres just for their looks can be counter-productive. While many 4×4 drivers want their vehicles to look tough and rugged, they actually want on-road performance similar to that of an ordinary saloon car.

Pippa Rallies Round!

This year’s Monte Carlo Rally was certainly an occasion to remember for Pippa Inglis, who works for Vredestein UK. A keen rallying fan, Pippa and Belgian driver Pat Lambert took part in the event, driving a Porsche 356 SC, shod with Vredestein tyres, naturally. Not only did the duo complete the event, but they finished in an impressive 23rd place and, as the highest-placed female team, were awarded the Coupe des Dames (Ladies’ Cup).

Mannino and Turner on Discussion Panel

Gaetano Mannino, president of Pirelli Tire North America (PTNA), was one of the participants in a panel discussion on “Views from Italian and US Business Leaders” at Emory University earlier this week. Also on the panel was Ted Turner, CNN Founder and philanthropist, David Abney, president of UPS International, and Giancarlo Fantappie, president and CEO of Ansaldobreda, Inc.

Standing Out From the Crowd

The Last Building BRIC

Much has been written about the emerging Indian, Chinese and Russian markets, but what about South America? This continent is full of potential, something that is demonstrated by the fact that all the major players are there (Pirelli, Goodyear and Bridgestone/Firestone being particularly strong) and are already positioning themselves for the next market explosion. However for all its potential, the continent can also be described as tumultuous – at the end of November 2005, for example, Bridgestone/Firestone had to quell a violent dispute at a plant in Venezuela.
