Martin Krämer New Lanxess CFO for China and Hong Kong

Martin Krämer, currently head of the Lanxess Group Function Treasury, is to be the specialty chemicals group’s new CFO for Greater China. Krämer, aged 41, will begin the Shanghai based position on April 1, 2008. In this function, which in future will also include responsibility for Hong Kong, Krämer will continue to report to Lanxess CFO Matthias Zachert. The successor to Krämer as head of the Group Function Treasury, effective March 1, 2008 is Christoph Koch, currently head of the Corporate Finance department within this Group Function. The present CFO in China, Marc Horn, is returning to Group headquarters in Leverkusen to take up new duties.

Kumho OE for Mercedes-Benz Viano X-Clusive

Kumho has entered into an agreement with Daimler AG to provide tyres for OE fitment to the new Mercedes-Benz Viano X-Clusive, the German manufacturer’s luxury MPV first displayed at last October’s Tokyo motor show and scheduled for release in March.

The new vehicle will be supplied with 18-inch alloy wheels as standard, and the agreement with Kumho will see around 10,000 tyres delivered. The Viano X-Clusive is the second Mercedes-Benz model to be supplied by the South Korean manufacturer – its tyres have also been fitted as OE to the A-Class since February 2007.

Chinese Court Enforces Bridgestone Patent Infringement Ruling

On February 27 Bridgestone publicly released details of a recent patent infringement case in China. A Beijing court has ruled in favour of Bridgestone Corporation in a patent infringement case against Chaoyang Long March Tyre Co., Ltd, the Liaoning Province based manufacturer of the Long March brand of truck tyres.

After it came to Bridgestone’s attention that the design of certain Long March truck and bus radials may infringe the tyre major’s patented intellectual property, the company commenced legal action against Long March in December 2006. The Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court presided over the proceedings, and upon deliberation, ruled in favour of Bridgestone in March 2007. Long March Tyre was ordered to stop manufacturing and selling the infringing products, and to pay damages to Bridgestone. As Long March Tyre did not file an appeal, the ruling became effective.

Bandvulc Invests In Shearography Machine

Bandvulc Tyres Ltd recently took delivery of a new high speed shearography machine from Steinbichler in Germany. Assembly and installation was completed within three days and all went without a hitch.

The machine is now being used to inspect casings entering the retread manufacturing process. After extensive testing, casing shearography has shown to save on in-process rejects due to casing failures which would otherwise not be detected until each tyre is finally inspected before leaving the factory.

Kumho Signs Civil Aviation Agreement with US

Kumho’s long awaited breakthrough in the area of civil aviation arrived on February 19. That day Kumho Tires CEO Dr Sae Chul Oh visited the US Embassy in Singapore and, on behalf of the South Korean manufacturer, signed a Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement (BASA) between South Korea and the US. With the signing of this document, the door has been opened for Kumho to supply tyres to civil aircraft that operate in the United States.

Goodyear Dunlop Invests in Next Tread Equipment

Goodyear Dunlop UK has taken delivery of new machinery at its Next Tread truck tyre retreading plant in Wolverhampton. The two new Next Tread machines represent a six figure investment for the company’s truck tyre business.

Ken Wilson, QTECH Manager, Retread Europe explained the role of the machines: “The investment is in quality to enable highly accurate, repeatable process control, thus ensuring the highest possible standard of tyre to our customers. The machines are used to buff casings and in the building of the Next Tread (retreaded) tyres.

Continental Relaunches ContiNetwork CV Tyre Retail Business

Continental has relaunched its ContiNetwork UK commercial vehicle tyre retail operation. The new-look ContiNetwork numbers 55 members, covering 75 specific territories across the UK. 12 members were lost during the transition period, being replaced by a further 12. According to Continental Tyre Group commercial vehicle sales and marketing director Arthur Gregg, the updated network offers a more balanced offering for dealer partners; and allows the flexibility for dealers to custom-make partner arrangements.

Bridgestone’s Emkes to Serve on Greif BOD

Bridgestone Americas Holding chairman and CEO Mark Emkes has been appointed to the nine-person board of directors of Delaware based industrial packaging form Greif Inc. Emkes has committed himself to a one-year term on the company’s board.

Greif Inc. has 10,300 employees and in the fiscal year ended October 31, 2007 generated revenue of US$3.32 billion and recorded profit of $156.3 million.

Increase In Share Capital For Nokian Tyres

An increase in the share capital of Nokian Tyres, totalling 186,884 euros, was entered into the Trade Register on February 26, 2008.

The shares will be traded on the Helsinki Exchanges together with the old shares as of February 27, 2008. After the increase, Nokian Tyres plc’s share capital stands at 24,926,140.00 euros.

Pirelli’s ‘Scorpion’ for Gravel Making its WRC Debut in Mexico

Pirelli’s new Scorpion tyres will make their first appearance on the opening gravel event of this year’s World Rally Championship. The gruelling Mexican stages, which run at altitudes in excess of 2000 metres, will, believes Pirelli, be a baptism of fire for its new WRC gravel rubber.

The high altitude gravel roads that characterise the Rally Mexico (which runs between 27 February and 2 March) will form the backdrop to the debut of Pirelli’s Scorpion tyres, specifically designed for the rigours of the WRC. The event, which takes place on roads around Leon, not far from Mexico City, will prove an excellent test for the specialised rubber that Pirelli has painstakingly developed for gravel events. As gravel is the most common surface on this year’s championship, Pirelli believes the importance of this all-new tyre cannot be underestimated.

SPR licensees begin production

It is almost 20 years since the Rösler Group bought the Schelkmann patents for the pre-cured retreading of OTR tyres. Today this German company has reached a position on the European and global retreading market where the Schelkmann procedure is itself used as a product, a product that appears to be in strong demand. During the past two years the Rösler Group has emphasised the commercialisation of Schelkmann licenses, obviously a good means of generating cash through licence fees, but also very attractive to the German group; together with the licence comes a production plant using Rösler technology and a subsequent demand for Rösler pre-cured OTR treads. As of March there are six Schelkmann production entities operating worldwide, one of which is Rösler’s model plant in Dortmund, the company’s location in Western Germany.

Bridgestone to Exhibit Eco Products at EPIF 2008

At the start of March the Eco-Products International Fair 2008 (EPIF 2008) will take place in Hanoi, Vietnam. This exhibition, one of the largest environment themed fairs held in the Asia region, is taking place for the fourth time, and this year tyre major Bridgestone has announced it will exhibit its products

It is unsurprising that the Japanese manufacturer has chosen to participate in such an event – in the company’s own words, the “Bridgestone Group continually strives to strengthen its environmental management and minimise its environmental footprint, all aimed at the goal of improving the world in which we all live.” At EPIF 2008, Bridgestone will showcase its environmental policy and projects related to environment and conservation.

Renault Retail Adding 9 Fast Fit Facilities in 2008

The Renault Retail Group has plans to add nine new fast-fit branches to its network during 2008 following the success of existing Renault Retail sites across the UK. The 100 per cent Renault owned network can provide motorists with a range of products and services, including tyres, brake pads, shock absorbers and oil changes.

The first Renault Minute fast fit facilities were installed in the group’s flagship London West, Birmingham and Manchester branches, and subsequently the company’s London city, London East, Cardiff, Leicester, Cannock, Liverpool and Bolton sites were also upgraded accordingly. This year’s expansion will now cover the Renault Retail dealerships at Oldham, Wirral, Swansea, Wolverhampton, Slough, Watford, Orpington, Dartford, and Croydon.

Cooper Tire Appoints General Manager, Mickey Thompson

A new general manager has been appointed to Cooper Tire & Rubber subsidiary Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels. Steve Kersh, most recently based in Melksham as Cooper Tire’s director of European sales and marketing, will oversee all aspects of Mickey Thompson operations, including finance, human resources, sales and marketing, supply chain, information technology and business development.

Kersh joined the company in 1993 as a production supervisor, and has served as a management trainee at the Bowling Green, Ohio, hose plant; as international customer service coordinator; international sales trainee; territory manager, international sales; regional manager, international sales; and manager of international sales. He earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, and a master’s in business administration from The University of Findlay, in Ohio.

Fulda Fairs Well in ‘Which?’ Test

The new Fulda EcoControl has been declared one of ‘Which? Magazines’ Best Buy tyres, ranking in the top three in the Supermini tyre test. Which? tested the UK’s top two selling sizes of tyre – the 195/65R15V and 175/65R14T, sizes commonly fitted to strong selling vehicles such as the Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf, Toyota Auris and Mazda 3.

Which? Magazine carried out the tyre tests to highlight that, with forward planning and product knowledge, buying tyres doesn’t have to be an emergency purchase. The publication tested the tyres in seven situations including dry braking, dry handling, wet braking, wet grip on the straight and on a bend, wear, and noise eco rating, generating an overall performance percentage. Fulda is pleased with the results its 195/65R15V tyre achieved during the test – the Fulda EcoControl’s overall score of 63 per cent was a considerable 43 per cent higher than that of the lowest performing tyre. Fulda performed well in dry braking and wet grip in corners, ranking higher than the overall test winner.
