First Student Team in History of Le Mans to fit Yokohama Tyres

The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd. has announced that it will support the first student team in history to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Yokohama will supply Advan race tyres to Tokai University’s “Le Mans Challenge Project” in the 76th 24 Hours of Le Mans, which will be held over the weekend of 14-15 June at the Sarthe Circuit in France. Yokohama has a long track record at Le Mans, stretching back more than 20 years.

Yokohama is also involved in supporting another student motorsport project: the OSU Dakar Rally Challenge Project, led by Osaka Sangyo University. This project aims to tackle environmental problems through motorsport and features Ukyo Katayama as a driver.

Sumo Firenza Increasing its European Profile

During the past 18 months or so Sumo Firenza has steadily increased its European profile through exhibiting at a number of international tyre exhibitions and introducing its flagship Sumo Firenza ST-08 pattern. The company reports that its sales performance in the UK, Ireland and Europe continues to grow; here in the UK Bond International has been appointed sole distributor, and in Ireland this role is handled by Daly Tyres.

The Sumo Firenza ST-08 pattern includes a low aspect ratio pattern and base compound intended to absorb and combat road noise and straight wide grooves for water drainage at speed. The tyres are, adds Sumo Firenza, manufactured with state-of-the-art Japanese technology, and the ST-08 range is available in 28 size options from 195/55R15 V through to 215/35ZR18 W. This range, reports the manufacturer, will increase in due course to include 19 inch and 20 inch fitments.

Cambridge Researcher Develops E-Spring Suspension

Cambridge University PhD researcher Salah Elmonselhy, from the University’s Department of Engineering, has proposed a kind of E-shaped suspension design. The new form of suspension promises to “revolutionise the experience of people who drive heavy goods vehicles” enhancing driver control, improve comfort and increase safety. It is also said to reduce fuel consumption and cut the cost of fitting specialist equipment to vehicles so that they can cope with different loads.

At the moment, commercial and heavy good vehicles need to have their suspension fine-tuned in accordance with the load they are carrying, so that drivers can control them. For example, a vehicle with soft suspension is suitable for light loads, but becomes difficult to control if it has to carry extra weight. On the other hand, giving a vehicle hard suspension can make it easy to handle with a heavy load, but the driver and passengers will be in for a bumpy ride once the load is removed.

Record Breaking Performance

Ruling the high performance roost at Michelin is the Pilot Sport PS2 and the Pilot Sport Cup +. The first of these is a tyre that, in April 2008, earned the distinction of being the tyre fitted to the world’s fastest production car – a Shelby SuperCars’ Ultimate Aero, fitted with the Michelin tyres, set a new record of 256.18 mph (412.28 km/h) during tests in the US. This accomplishment, the first occasion in which a US vehicle manufacturer has held the speed record since 1967, took place with little to no wear present on the Michelin tyre.

So this second generation Michelin tyre is obviously not one intended for plodding trips to the supermarket, then. Designed in close collaboration with prestige vehicle manufacturers in the sport and supersport segments, the Pilot Sport PS2 has been homologated for various models from, amongst others, Audi, BMW, Porsche and Mercedes. The Pilot Sport PS2 features a rigid asymmetric tread pattern – Michelin points out the similarities this format, with its four grooves around the tyre, shares with Formula 1 tyres. The pattern is one that ensures superior steering response, the manufacturer adds, and grip on wet and dry surfaces is improved by the presence of a dual compound plus the use of a Variable Contact Patch (VCP) System that maintains the optimum size and shape of the tyre’s contact patch whether driving in a straight line or under hard cornering.

CTNA “Going Well”, Says Dr. Hippe

According to comments made by Continental AG CFO Dr. Alan Hippe, the company appears satisfied with the performance of its Continental Tire North America unit during the first financial quarter. Thomson Financial news reports that, on the sidelines of the company’s annual shareholder meeting, Dr. Hippe reported “the business is going well.” He further commented that the US tyre market had suffered less from the effects of lacklustre consumer spending and the US sub-prime load crisis than had been feared. While Dr. Hippe made mention of indications the market is starting to recover, he said the company cannot rule out further price rises this year to offset raw material costs.

Ceat to Reduce Mumbai Workforce by 25%

India’s Ceat Ltd is said to be reducing the 2,000 strong workforce at its facility in Bhandup, Mumbai by as much as a quarter in order to reduce costs. This plant will also soon be relocated to the city of Ambernath, and before this takes place Ceat intends to offer voluntary redundancy to employees over the age of 56. The hiring of new workers at the Bhandup facility has not taken place for about two years.

“We can save costs by relocating to Ambernath,” said Ceat managing director Paras Chowdhary. “The company will also unlock value by selling the 23 acres of Bhandup land. The money will be invested in funding our expansion plans. He added that the company will save Rs170 million (£2.13 million) in local taxes by relocating in addition to lowering operating costs.

Pirelli Earns Fifth RMA Award

Pirelli Tire North America received an industry award for achieving significant improvements in worker health and safety over the last year – its fifth such award in the last five years, according to the company.

The Rubber Manufacturers Association presented its Safety and Health Improvement Program award at the organisation’s annual meeting in St. Augustine, Florida on April 13. The award was created to encourage and reward member companies for safety and health advancements made in the workplace, Pirelli said.

Bridgestone & Firestone Prices to Rise in North America

Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire and Bridgestone Firestone Canada have announced price increases for Bridgestone and Firestone brand tyre lines, as well as all associate brand tyres. The announced increases of up to 10 per cent apply to passenger car, light truck, truck and bus, agricultural and OTR tyres, and will affect replacement, original equipment and export market products. Implementation of these price increases is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2008.

Yokohama Revises Annual Projections

Yokohama Rubber announced on April 25 that its projections for consolidated net sales and operating income for the fiscal year between April 1, 2007 and March 31, 2008 have been projected upwards. The new projections call for net sales to increase 10.6 per cent over the previous year, to 550 billion yen (£2.65 billion), and for operating income to increase 56.6 per cent to 33 billion yen (£159.22 million). The company also announced a downward revision in its projection for growth in consolidated earnings, with net income now projected to rise 28.3 per cent to 21 billion yen (£101.32 million).

New Agri/Forestry Tyre from Trelleborg

Trelleborg has recently developed and launched a new range of tyres for agricultural and forestry uses. Known as the T410 Agroforest, the new line is intended for numerous global markets, including the UK, and the manufacturer reports the new tyre has been designed with severe application requirements in mind, guaranteeing users minimum impact and less damage, good grip and traction in tough terrain, high levels of stability during heavy service thanks to its shoulder design and a larger lug contact area compared to an ordinary tractor tyre pattern.

Bandvulc Develops New Plus Range Using Footprint Analysis

Leading independent retreader, Bandvulc, has released details of how it used footprint analysis in the development of its Plus range. The footprint analysis machine has been built in-house and is specifically designed to improve tyre mileage and handling characteristics. “The purpose of the machine is to simulate a truck tyre, under load,” says Patrick O’Connell, director of The Bandvulc Group. “When pressure is applied to the tyre, equivalent to the right tonnage, a digitised tyre footprint is created on pressure sensitive paper. Results from the subsequent analysis are used to create an improved tyre profile that optimises performance,” he adds.

This new range of tyres, known as the Plus range, further enhances already established brand names with proven performance. The aim is to increase tyre mileage by 10 per cent and will be slowly rolled out across Bandvulc’s entire product range.

Statement on Hunter Suit Filed Against Hennessy Industries

This is the relevant portion of the official statement issued by Hunter Engineering regarding its recent patent infringement lawsuit filed against competitor Hennessy Industries:

“On April 7, 2008, Hunter Engineering filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Hennessy Industries, Inc. relating to Hunter US patent numbers 6,952,964 and 7,320,248. These patents involve technology marketed by Hunter as SmartWeight that simplifies the wheel balancing process and significantly reduces the materials necessary to effectively balance wheels, thus reducing the cost to perform proper wheel balancing operations.

“The lawsuit implicates Hennessy’s wheel balancing equipment that includes the ‘Coats EconoBalance’ feature or the ‘Coats EB’ feature.” (Tire Review/Akron)

Double Event for Kumho MSA British Rallycross at Pembrey

The Kumho Tyres MSA British Rallycross Championship moves to Pembrey in South Wales on May 3 and 4 for a crucial double-header that forms the second and third rounds of the championship. Title holder Ollie O’Donovan won the first round of the championship and holds a three-point lead at the head of the championship tables entering rounds two and three. Last year proved to be a bogey track for O’Donovan, technical problems costing him places in both of the championship’s visits to the fast Welsh track.

“I think I had quite an easy run in the first round but I’m not expecting it to be like that at Pembrey as there’s a long run from the start to the first corner and that doesn’t really suit my car as much as some others,” said O’Donovan, who added that his plan is to race hard right from the start. “I think everyone will be conscious that there’s a need to get the cars through two full days, but I’d rather go for it right from the start and take my win on Saturday than hang back and take a place and then perhaps miss out on Sunday too. The two drivers I’d be most concerned about are Steve Hill and Liam Doran, but I’ll take each day as it comes.”

US States Lent Support to 2008 NTSW

The RMA says that 25 states in the US issued proclamations or statements supporting National Tire Safety Week, which comes to a close on April 26.

Across the nation, more than 19,000 tyre retail, auto dealer and automotive repair facilities distributed tyre care RMA-produced NTSW brochures, and many of these also offered free tyre care service to motorists. “Proper tyre care is essential to vehicle safety and optimum fuel economy,” said Dan Zielinski, RMA senior vice president of public affairs. “We are grateful to states that are helping to educate motorists to take just five minutes every month to check their tyres.”

States supporting NTSW this year included: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia, and Virginia. Titan Gets Deal With Deere

Titan Tire has signed a three-year deal to supply farm tyres to John Deere.

“John Deere has been Titan’s largest customer for years,” said Titan chairman and CEO Morry Taylor, “and we are pleased to enter into this agreement that assures Deere a supply of farm tyres. As the agricultural economy moves forward, the first year value of this contract should exceed over $100 million.” Titan did not specify which types of tyres it would supply, or if the deal included wheels.
