Translogik: Helping To Keep Tyres in Top Condition

With tyre costs rising, it makes sense for hauliers and fleet managers to ensure that their tyres are maintained in A1 condition. And it is not just the cost of the tyre itself – properly maintained and inflated tyres can reduce fuel consumption. Translogik produces a range of tyre inspection solutions for fleet managers, including hand-held tread depth and pressure probe – the OTR probe can measure treads up to 130mm deep and pressures up to 190 psi. These are complemented by Translogik's own software, which provides the fleet operator with a totally automated tyre management and fleet inspection process, allowing a series of reports to be generated. These can include a work-to-do list, highlighting what maintenance work is required for each vehicle, and a Tread Depth and Tyre Pressure Analysis.

Multistrada Reports Record Domestic Sales

PT Multistrada Arah Sarana Tbk, the Indonesian tyre manufacturer, reportedly achieved record tyre sales in the first quarter of 2010. Local news sources quoted “a source familiar with the matter” as saying Multistrada sold 1.5 million passenger car tyres in the first three months of 2010, with motorcycle tyres sales totally over 600,000 units. These figures are more than fifth up on the same period last year when the company sold 1.2 million of car tyres and half as many motorbike tyres (300,000 units). Multistrada produces the Achilles, Corsa, and Strada brands.

Report: Gajah Tunggal to Expand Production Plant

Indonesian news sources are reporting that Indonesia's largest tyre manufacturer, PT Gajah Tunggal Tbk, is planning to set up a new tyre plant lift production capacity from 30,000 tyres per day to 45,000. According to one blogger, the company also is preparing to build a new motorcycle tyre plant in a bid to almost triple its production capacity in this sector from 37,000 to 105,000 tyres per day.

Indonesian Tyre Sales Shoot Up 54.62%

The Association of Indonesian Tire Producers (APBI) has reported that domestic car tyres sales volumes jumped 54.62 per cent to 7.87 million tyres in the first two months of 2010, compared to 5.09 million tyres at the same point last year. According to data, published on the Indonesian Insider Stories website, the sales volume of motorcycle tyres rose significantly, up 22.7 per cent from 4.22 million tyres in the first two months of last year to 5.18 million tyres at the start of 2010. The association has not reported first quarter sales volume figures.

Bridgestone Survey Reveals Cost of Under-Inflated Tyres

Europeans’ concern about the spiralling cost of fuel is being exacerbated by the state of motorists’ tyres according to research conducted by Bridgestone. According to the manufacturer, four billion litres – worth approximately £4.6 billion – of fuel are being wasted every year due to the under-inflated tyres of four in every five motorists. This inadequate tyre care does not just affect motorists’ wallets; the wasted fuel equates to 9.3 million tonnes of unnecessary CO2 emissions, and therefore increases the harm to the environment caused by motoring. The findings come from safety checks carried out on 52,400 cars in 15 E.U countries in 2009.

Goodyear Introduces “RM” OTR Range, 63-Inch Sizes to Follow

In April, Goodyear is launching the first size in its new “RM” range of haulage tyres for off-the-road applications – a product line-up that will ultimately include two 63-inch fitments. The RM name stands for “rock mining”, and with this in mind an extra deep tread has been utilised in order to provide extend tread life in harsh operating conditions. Furthermore, says Goodyear, the presence of interlocking stability blading is intended to promote a solid footprint, and high angle grooves promote traction and cleaning.

Bekaert Opens Asia R&D Centre

On April 20 Bekaert open its first research and development centre outside of Belgium. The Asia Research and Development Center in China’s Jiangsu Province is intended to strengthen the company’s “commitment to develop and supply innovative products to Asian customers while enhancing its technological leadership in the region.”

Indian Manufacturers Announce Price Increases

Indian tyre makers are putting up prices in response to the continued rise in the cost of natural rubber. Apollo Tyres is said to be increasing prices by between two and four per cent, although one online source states the Apollo prices will rise by up to seven per cent as early as May. During an interview, company vice chairman and managing director Neeraj Kanwar said further increases cannot be ruled out should the cost of rubber continue its upward course.

Delticom Reports 50% Online Revenue Increase in 1Q 2010

Delticom AG has published preliminary figures for the first quarter of 2010, which provide further evidence for the increased influence of the Internet on the tyre business. According to a preliminary results statement published 20 April, Delticom achieved first quarter 2010 revenues of 74 million euros (£64.5 million; $99.44 million), up 45 per cent compared with the 51.0 million euros reported in the same period in 2009. However, e-commerce revenues for the first quarter great faster still, totalling 70 million euros (£61 million; $94.08 million), up 50 per cent from 46.7 million euros in the first quarter of last year.

Nankang Raises European Prices 6 – 8%

Nankang Rubber Tire Corp., Ltd has increased production prices across its entire range of passenger, 4×4, SUV, van and snow tyres effect 20 April. Nankang said the price increases are due to the escalation of raw materials and energy-related expenses. “We appreciate the support and understanding of our customers. It was a very difficult decision to raise prices, and we need relative income to maintain same service to our valued customers,” said Eric Shih, Nankang Tire manager of export department. According to the company, Nankang last raised prices in November 2009.

Goodyear Launches ‘New Generation’ Mixed Service Tyres

At the Bauma show in Munich, Goodyear unveiled the first products in what it describes as being a “brand new generation of mixed service tyres.” The Omnitrac MSS II and Omnitrac MSD II form the foundation products in a range designed specifically to meet the needs of the construction industry and operators who encounter both on and off road conditions. Goodyear comments that the tyres have been developed to deliver users enhanced mileage and traction, along with greater damage protection.

Bosch, Eberspächer Emission Systems JV Commences Operations

The emissions systems joint venture between Robert Bosch GmbH, Deutz AG and Eberspächer GmbH & Co. KG commenced operations earlier this month having received the necessary approvals from the EU Commission, according to the companies. In December 2009, the three parties announced their intention to co-operate in reducing exhaust emissions from construction machinery and agricultural vehicles, to satisfy future emission regulations.

Agri OE Sector Weakness Affect Trelleborg Tyre Sales

Speaking on Trelleborg AG’s performance during the first three months of the year, company president and CEO Peter Nilsson stated “the first quarter of 2010 is showing that we are building a stronger Trelleborg and that we are constantly moving towards growing and profitable segments The implemented action programmes continue to give positive effects and we are gradually growing in to a more efficient structure.”

Tyremen Moves into 26,000 sq ft Premises

Tyremen Hull Ltd is expanding into new 26,000 square foot (2500 square metre) premises, reportedly creating “a new one stop shop for tyre services.” The new site in Witty Street, west Hull, just a few yards from one of the firm’s current sites, means the well established family tyre business in Hull is bringing all its services together under one roof. Currently, the company is split between three units in Witty Street, Anlaby Road and Argyle Street, however after the move is completed the three sites will be consolidated into one “huge” facility offering services such as tyres, alloy wheels, batteries, exhausts and wheel alignment.

By centralising all its work at the former Swedecor premises, Tyremen representatives say the company hopes to improve efficiency and increase work capacity. Tyremen was set up more than 40 years ago and is run by co-directors Lindsay Carlin and his son Phil.

UK is Fourth Largest Vehicle Making Nation in Europe

The UK is the fourth largest automotive producer in Europe, building two million engines and one million vehicles in 2009, according to latest Motor Industry Facts book published today (20 April 2010) by SMMT. Full year 2009 used car sales volumes were down only marginally on 2008 to 6,798,864 or 5.4 per cent. Automotive manufacturing is said to account for 10.6 per cent of total UK exports, valued at £26.6 billion.
