Bridgestone UK Shows Market Share Gains

Bridgestone UK says that independent industry figures show that the company made market share gains in all sectors of the commercial vehicle tyre business. Figures released by the company are as follows: UK replacement market shares for van tyres have risen from 11 per cent in 2001 to 13 per cent last year, truck (22 per cent to 24 p.c.), agricultural (15 p.c. to 16 p.c) and off-road (37 p.c. to 39 p.c.). Truck tyre sales topped 300,000 pieces last year and Bridgestone claims a market share of 16 per cent for steer tyres and 26 per cent for drive tyres.

Kumho UK Wins OE Van Tyre Contract

Kumho UK has been awarded a contract to supply tyres as original equipment to specialist van manager LDV. 70 per cent of LDV’s annual production of Pilot and Convoy vans will be equipped with Kumho’s radial 857 commercial van tyres in sizes 185 R14 and 205 R14. The contract follows a rigorous quality audit at Kumho’s Kwangju plant and tyre testing at the MIRA proving ground in the UK, resulting in the Korean manufacturer being awarded Approved Supplier status.

Cost-Cutting Proposals Rejected By Michelin Workers?

A report in the local paper, the Burnley Express, quoting an anonymous worker, says that workers at the Michelin tyre plant in the town have rejected cost-cutting proposals put forward by management. These proposals are said to include a 25 per cent reduction in shift allowance and some workers moving from a four day week to three days. However, a union spokesman said that proposals have been neither accepted nor rejected and unions and management will meet on 29 January to discuss the situation. Around 450 workers would be affected at Burnley, where truck and bus tyres are made.
