Franchised and Independent Garages to Participate in Tyre Safety Month

Product News

Franchised and independent workshops have been invited to participate in the national tyre safety month in October. The campaign is being coordinated by TyreSafe, the UK tyre safety organisation, to inform motorists about the importance of correct tyre pressures for safety, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. According to TyreSafe, almost 25 per cent of cars and vans on the roads in the UK have at least one badly worn or illegal tyre and tyre safety checks are an excellent way for retailers to encourage motorists to visit their premises. Many dealers are set to take advantage of the promotional material, featuring Channel 5 Fifth Gear motoring programme presenter Vicki Butler-Henderson, including posters and leaflets now available to download from the TyreSafe website at www.tyresafe.org.

Tyre Retailers Encouraged to Support Tyre Safety Month

Product News

Plans are well advanced for the first ever UK-wide tyre safety campaign, being organised by TyreSafe, the industry’s leading tyre safety organisation. The campaign is already said to have gained support from “all major tyre companies and tyre retailers.” The campaign will kick off on the 1st October and will run through the whole of the month. The campaign will focus on the important part that tyres play in road safety, and one of the key messages of the month long initiative will be under inflation and how this can impact on safety, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

TyreSafe Declares October ‘Tyre Safety Month’

Product News

UK tyre safety organisation TyreSafe is co-ordinating a national tyre safety month in October to raise awareness of the crucial role that tyres play in road safety and avoiding crashes, particularly in the wet. The campaign will strongly focus on tyre pressure and how correctly inflated tyres can reduce both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Tyre Safety Month, which TyreSafe claims is the first campaign of its kind arranged by the country’s tyre industry, already has the backing of major tyre companies and retailer groups in the UK together with numerous government and non-governmental organisations. The campaign will be led by motoring journalist and Channel 5 Fifth Gear television presenter Vicki Butler-Henderson.

Study Suggests Many Second Hand Tyres Unfit for Re-Sale

Product News

According to the results of a regional study a high proportion of the partially worn second hand tyres sold in the UK each year fail to meet current safety standards, and if this study is representative of the nationwide situation as many as 600,000 of these unsafe tyres may be on sale throughout the UK each year.

A recent survey of suppliers conducted by the Lincolnshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service, with support from TyreSafe, revealed that some 30 per cent of the inspected part worn tyres were found to possess serious defects that could pose a safety risk when fitted to a vehicle. Much of the damage found by the Trading Standards Service was of a type not detectable by visual inspection and included unsafe repairs, damage to the tyre’s bead area that reduced its ability to maintain pressure whilst on the rim, and tyres possessing structural damaged caused through being run in when deflated. The thoroughness of the examination each tyre receives before being sold has also been called into question, as have been the qualifications and ability of the examiners whose job it is to identify faults.

Goodyear has launched a radio information campaign to highlight the role of preventative tyre maintenance in road safety. The campaign also promotes the launch of MyGoodyear.co.uk, a new website that not only offers safety advice, but also celebrates the great British Bank Holiday with suggestions for ‘Good Days Out’ across the UK. Goodyear launched the website with interviews on nineteen local and regional radio stations this week, reaching an audience of over 1.4 million listeners.

MyGoodyear.co.uk, in conjunction with our DriveHomeSafely partnership, offers advice on where to go, but also on how to get there safely. Preventative tyre maintenance can mean the difference between a brilliant bank holiday and a potentially tragic weekend, and we are urging drivers to carry out simple pressure and tread depth checks before setting out. MyGoodyear.co.uk provides inspiration for people looking for a fun bank holiday weekend with an eclectic range of suggestions from organic food markets to a sheep and goat Grand National!”

New Tyres Safer on Rear Wheels – Tyresafe

Product News

Established wisdom amongst a large section of the motoring public and even within the tyre industry dictates that new tyres should be fitted to a vehicle’s front wheels. At least 50 per cent of motorists, according to Tyresafe, believe this front fitting preference to be correct practice. However recent tests indicate that fitting new tyres to a vehicle’s rear wheels may be of greater benefit, regardless of whether the vehicle is front or rear drive.

Research suggests that fitting new tyres to the rear wheels will allow for better dispersal of water on the road surface, improving straight line braking. Partially worn rear tyres can, conversely, increase a vehicle’s tendency to oversteer, and sudden failure of a rear tyre will cause a vehicle to become much harder to control than a similar failure occurring in a front tyre.

Safety Groups Team Up to Target Motorists

Product News

TyreSafe has become the latest organisation to work in conjunction with RoadSafe, a road safety partnership of companies and road safety professionals. This is not the first time the two groups have worked together – the Tyre Industry Council, as TyreSafe was then known, has conducted various initiatives with RoadSafe, and in 2001 the TIC gained a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for its practical work promoting the dangers of driving on defective or badly worn tyres, a contributory factor in many accidents.

Less than Super Tyres

Product News

They may be worth a hundred grand or more but even the most exotic supercar will seem a whole lot less desirable once it is wrapped around a tree or a lamp post. And according to research by a leading UK tyre organisation, this unpleasant outcome may be far more of a possibility for drivers of supercars than for the rest us lesser mortals.

TyreSafe Highlights Pressure Washer Dangers

Product News

TyreSafe (formerly the Tyre Industry Council) has issued a warning outlining potential safety risks posed by equipment used by hand car wash teams in the UK. It appears that the industrial strength washing equipment used by such outfits, which are capable of dispensing water at extremely high pressure, can cause sidewall damage and degradation if aimed directly at a tyre, especially if the water is heated or if applied for a prolonged period of time.
