Australia to tyre industry: If you don’t act on recycling, we will

Australia’s government has included tyres in the list of products that industry must ensure are handled and ultimately disposed of in an environmentally appropriate manner. Minister for the Environment and Water Tanya Plibersek added tyres to the Minister’s product stewardship priority list for 2022–23. This list was published on 8 November.

Australia: Tasmania launches waste tyre reprocessing grant scheme

The Tasmanian government is offering industry partners up to AU$3 million for the development of rubber crumbing plants or alternative and sustainable solutions for the recovery of end-of-life tyres. Australia’s island state is offering this support under its recently launched Waste Tyre Reprocessing Grant Program.

Collaborators wanted: Tyre Stewardship Australia debuts circular economy programme

Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) has launched ‘Circular Economy Collaborator’, a programme that supports its vision of circularity for end-of-life tyres as well as government policy such as the ReMade in Australia recycling campaign. The programme’s introduction follows the outlawing of whole used tyre exports from 1 December 2021.

Australia banning waste tyre exports next month

From 1 December 2021, new laws in Australia will extend a ban on waste exports out of the country to tyres. It follows a cessation of unprocessed waste glass and mixed plastic exports earlier in the year. Reporting this measure, Tyre Stewardship Australia says the change is part of a broader commitment by the Australian Government to reduce waste, increase recycling rates and build capacity in Australia’s recycling industry.

Tyre Stewardship Australia welcomes new scheme members

In what it calls a landmark commitment, Tyre Stewardship Australia has announced that off-the-road (OTR) tyre importers Bearcat, Bridgestone Mining Solutions, Goodyear, Kal Tire, Michelin and Yokohama have committed to joining the voluntary Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme from January 2022.

The association representing firms across the tyre supply chain states that if someone fitting this bill has “an idea that utilises end-of-life tyres,” then it “has the funds to assist.”

Hankook joins Australian ELT stewardship scheme

Hankook Tire & Technology Group is the latest tyre manufacturer to partner with Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA), an organisation set up to promote the development of viable markets for end-of-life tyres, and as such is now contributing to the National Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme. The Korean tyre maker’s engagement lifts the number of participating tyre importers to nine; in addition to Hankook, Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear & Dunlop, Kumho, Michelin, Pirelli, Toyo, Yokohama are involved with the scheme.
