Chelsea Ladies FC will support this year’s Tyre Safety Month, raising tyre safety awareness among Britain’s drivers. Having recently lifted an historic ‘Double’, the team has taken time out of its Champions League preparations to encourage motorists to practise #SafeTyreChecks – the key message of October’s month-long tyre safety campaign. The backing from the English Women’s Super League and FA Cup champions extends the support already offered to Tyre Safety Month by Yokohama, Chelsea FC’s Official Shirt Sponsor, and TyreSafe board member.
Players and coaching staff from table-topping Burton Albion FC and Carlisle United attended tyre safety events hosted by Pirelli and Pro-Align to start October’s Tyre Safety Month. The roadshows, held at Pirelli’s Carlisle factory and Burton headquarters, aimed to remind Pirelli staff and the wider motoring public about the importance of regular tyre tread depth checks. To help deliver the message in a fast and highly visual manner, the events utilised the new Hunter QuickTread drive over tread depth measurement system, available exclusively in the UK through Pro-Align.
The AA is encouraging drivers to check their tyres as research released during Tyre Safety Month reveals the risks drivers are taking by neglecting vital tyre safety checks. Two-thirds of women (65 per cent) and a third of men (36 per cent) do not check their tyres regularly, instead relying on their garage to tell them when their tyres are worn out and need to be changed.
When did you last do it? That’s probably a question you didn’t expect to encounter here, and we beg you not to don your angry hat and express your disgust. The question is tongue-in-cheek, and is being posed by TyreSafe to mark today’s start of Tyre Safety Month.
Supermarket giant Asda has joined forces with TyreSafe to bring vital lifesaving tyre safety messages to its stores and customers nationwide. Running throughout October, Tyre Safety Month is the tyre industry’s main annual campaign, providing a focal point for the entire industry and an ideal platform to educate road users about the importance of correct tyre care and maintenance. The awareness raising campaign brings road safety professionals, government officials, emergency services, businesses, tyre dealers and others together to organise local awareness-raising events throughout the UK.
The Tyre Safety Companion, a recently-launched app for Android and Apple devices, has been named one of the best motoring apps for 2015 by Auto Express magazine. Stuart Jackson, chairman of Tyre Safe, the organisation behind the Tyre Safety Companion, calls the app’s naming as one of Auto Express’ Best Apps for 2015 a “fantastic accolade,” adding: “It’s important that drivers have easy access to accurate tyre safety advice while they’re out and about, so we’re delighted that this latest innovation has already been identified as a potential life saver.”
A garage and tyre retailer has made a New Year’s resolution to communicate tyre safety messages throughout the year, using its customer database and social media channels as well as relationships with other area organisations concerned with road safety. Ibstock’s Jeff Fowkes Wheels won the inaugural 2013 TyreSafe Independent Garage Award, and now the company has pledged to continue its tyre safety campaigning throughout 2015. While these activities will remain focused on October’s Tyre Safety Month, Jeff Fowkes Wheels makes the point that the messages communicated to drivers then are valid year-round.

According to information obtained by TyreSafe under a Freedom of Information request, more than 2.2 million cars in the UK failed their annual MoT test last year due to the condition of their tyres. Commenting on this data supplied by the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency, the safety organisation’s chairman, Stuart Jackson, said it “beggars belief” that so many cars fail because of unsafe or illegal tyres.
Cheshire’s police force has joined the county’s Fire and Rescue Service as a member of TyreSafe, months after the latter emergency service was made TyreSafe’s 2013 emergency services award winner. “We are delighted to welcome Cheshire Police on board and look forward to developing some highly effective initiatives with them,” comments Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe.

The ever-swelling ranks of TyreSafe gathered at St Johns Hotel, Solihull to launch the 2014 edition of Tyre Safety Month. Chairman Stuart Jackson, enthusiastically wielding an enlarged coin, demonstrated the well-established 20p test during his introduction of the “driving rain, driving safe” theme; the test is particularly relevant to this year’s tread depth focused theme of aquaplaning. In 2013 tyre pressure took centre stage, but with 2013-14 being the wettest winter on record, and October usually the wettest month of the year anyway, TyreSafe has chosen to present a core message informing drivers of the importance of tread depth in combating what is arguably the most spectacular and frightening road safety phenomenon – in addition to reinforcing other messages, such as pressure, Jackson adds.
