The Pirelli Calendar is a survivor. While other pin-up calendars from within our industry have long been banished to workshop tearooms to avoid offending customers, Pirelli’s handiwork is hailed as iconic by countless people around the world, including those ignorant of the company’s day job as tyre maker. Followers of this most famous of all corporate freebie calendars eagerly await the launch of a new edition, and today their cup of joy is surely overflowing. At a high-budget event in New York, Pirelli has unveiled next year’s Cal.
In his 1865 classic, Lewis Carroll wrote that “imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality.” Tim Walker used this weapon to nice effect when shooting next year’s Pirelli Calendar, and in images released ahead of the creation’s official launch later this year, the London-based photographer invites us down the rabbit hole into a surreal world of dreams drawn from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
The 2018 Pirelli Calendar is being shot in London at the moment. Pirelli likes to keep the content and themes of its upcoming ‘Cal’ projects under wraps prior to their official unveiling, so we’ll likely have to wait until November to see more than a sneak preview or two. One detail Pirelli has shared, however, is that next year’s Calendar will feature the photographic artistry of Tim Walker.
