Chinese truck tyre tariffs to persist in UK?

Product News, UK News
The Court of Justice of The European Union

The European Court of Justice’s (ECJ) judgement that the European Union’s anti-dumping and anti-subsidy tariffs should be annulled has been welcomed by many of those responsible for distributing these products across the continent. Yet for importers of these products in post-Brexit United Kingdom, the truck tyre tariffs introduced by the European Commission appear to be persisting. Speaking to representatives of the Imported Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ITMA), the association whose members are most directly concerned with these tariffs, Tyres & Accessories now understands that the UK’s Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) does not intend to annul the tariffs since the ECJ’s judgement does not apply legally in the UK, even considering the view that the tariffs were implemented improperly under EC law. It follows that the status quo on these tariffs will be maintained, at least until the TRA reaches tyres in its review of the lengthy list of trade remedies inherited from the UK’s time as a member of the EU. Until such a review takes place, the tariffs will continue to apply until at least November 2023, and UK importers are effectively blocked from joining European colleagues in ending and recouping duties found to be improperly implemented.

RH Claydon commences Triangle UK distribution as Tym ceases trading

Company News, UK News
Triangle

RH Claydon has today become the exclusive UK distributor of Triangle truck and bus and off the road tyres. The change of distributor for the brand follows Tym International’s decision to cease trading on 30 October. The specialist tyre importer-wholesaler, in which Triangle took a strategic holding in 2013, announced its liquidation in early September. Tym’s managing director, Steve Eke, has since been appointed UK & Ireland sales director of Triangle Tyre Europe. The Chinese tyre manufacturer, among the country’s top five according to Tyrepress data, set up a new European team headquartered in Milan in 2017 under general manager Corrado Moglia. Commencing its distributorship, RH Claydon stated that it looks forward to building a strong relationship with the brand.

International News, UK News

When Triangle senior-vice president Lin Xiaobin told Tyres & Accessories that “TYM is doing a really great job in the UK”, you can tell that it was more than just encouraging words. TYM International’s sales (of which the Triangle brand tyre sales represent a large part) have totalled some US$40 million over the last three years. But to give some impression of the growth arc, 2013 sales are said to have generated $13 million alone.

TYM International: UK Triangle Truck Tyre Sales up 72%

Product News

Tym International has continually improved its truck tyre sales in the last five years, by an average of 41 per cent. This year the company proudly boasts that Triangle brand sales are already up 72 per cent on 2006. Another key part of the company’s offering is its range of Matador truck tyres, which company representatives say can be sold on “name, reputation and quality.” The Matador portfolio starts from the 205/75R17.5 through to 385/65R22.5. The company produces three patterns on most sizes in both drive and steer fitments to meet the needs of customers.
Four years ago, Tym International was invited to discuss importing products produced by the Triangle Tyre Corporation. Like Matador, Triangle’s range is said to be comprehensive to the needs of the UK.

TYM is the only UK company to sign a three-year agreement for 2007, 2008 and 2009. Steve Eke (General Manager) informed Tyres & Accessories: “We at TYM International are continually impressed with the level of commitment Triangle has and with that and the depth of knowledge they have on their products, it is no surprise that the company, indeed the whole of the Chinese economy, is thriving the way it is.”
