RH Claydon manager retires

Jim Parker retired on 18 November 2011 after 37 years in the tyre industry. Parker initially joined Kleber in 1974 as a tyre fitter for its competition department. During his time at Kleber, he took on various job roles including being in charge of the day to day running of the competition department and attending most major rally and race meetings, assisting the tyre manufacturer to six consecutive years of winning the production saloon car and production sports car championships. According to the company, Jim Parker was instrumental in the development of the radial race tyre, which was used intensively on tarmac rally events.

Dick Anderson dies

Well known tyre wholesale stalwart Dick Anderson died suddenly on Saturday 16 July. The news was confirmed by RH Claydon group business development manager, John Parker who wrote to Tyres Accessories: “It is with great sorrow that I must inform you of some sad news in that Dick Anderson unfortunately passed away.” Anderson, who retired just over a year ago, was apparently working alone in the garden at his old home in Welnetham when he suffered a massive heart attack.

One of the UK’s most prominent tyre suppliers for specialist application tyres, Speke’s Kirkby Tyres continues to supply Alliance, Double Coin and BKT ranges to the UK. The distributor’s product managers for the Indian Alliance and BKT brands – Ilan Goldstone and Dave Richardson respectively – told Tyres & Accessories that the brands’ continued growth in range coverage is being matched by the manufacturer’s focus on quality. Goldstone commented: “Alliance’s portfolio of tyres continues to grow not only in the industrial sector but across the whole of its product range. As a company they have identified and focused their efforts in producing some of the best performing tyres within their market sectors which has been aided by the construction of their new Indian manufacturing and R&D facility.” Richardson added that the BKT range is also expanding, with research and development “always at the forefront… On a recent trip to their factories in India it was clear to see as every batch of materials gets tested for quality every step of the way.”

Wholesalers show new Chinese-produced tyre lines

While the 2011 CV Show was well-attended by tyre majors and equipment suppliers alike, there was also a surprising number of tyre wholesale and distribution companies present. These included Kirkby Tyres & Wheels Ltd and RH Claydon Ltd as well as Tyreline OE Ltd and TD Tyres. What the two well-known wholesalers (Kirkby and RH Claydon) had in common was the fact that both firms were showing the latest Chinese-produced additions to their respective tyre product portfolios.

BKT Outlines Key Factors in “Success”

India’s Balkrishna Tyre (BKT) is setting some ambitious targets for its continued growth. In 2009 BKT held a 3 per cent market share in the off-highway tyres segment (comprising Agricultural, Industrial, Construction, Earth Moving Equipment, ATV and Lawn & Garden), with an expected share for the end of 2010 reaching 4.5 per cent, according to BKT. By 2015, the company hopes to reach a 10 per cent share. BKT has grown its turnover from $82 million in 2004, to $220 million in 2007 and $310 million at the end of 2009. The production value for the end of 2010 is estimated to be $450 million.

Recognising R H Claydon as “the leading UK truck tyre distributor,” Infinity Tyres has appointed the well-known wholesaler as the exclusive distributor for Infinity Truck (TBR) tyres in the UK. The news follows “a couple of months of discussion and negotiation,” which resulted in the new agreement being concluded. Infinity truck tyres will now be available from all of Claydon’s UK branches – Bury St Edmunds, Falkirk, Scunthorpe, Stockport and Swindon.

Wholesale Stalwart Dick Anderson Retires

After some 46 years in the industry, well known tyre industry veteran Dick Anderson retired from wholesaler RH Claydon on 30 June. Having started as a youngster in the industry with North British Tyre & Rubber (latter to become Uniroyal Tyres) in Edinburgh in 1964, Anderson says that he has enjoyed his time “in a fascinating and now complex industry” and seen the many changes over the years.

BKT Promotes All-Steel Radial OTR Tyres

Balkrishna Tyre (BKT) launched its latest range of OTR radials, which are sub-branded Earthmax at the Intermat show in April. At present they are available in SR 30 pattern E3/L3 tyres in 25-inch rim diameter and are the first Indian produced all steel casing radial tyre for earthmover application. According to the company, the first phase BKT is to extend the product line up to 35-inch diameter tyres in various patterns with multiple compound options. BKT has also increased its existing industrial and construction tyre range, with expansion of its radial industrial tractor tyre segment and launch of AT 621 pattern tyres for Backhoe loaders with special cut resistance compound & lug geometry. BKT boasts a comprehensive range of industrial, construction, material handling and earthmoving tyres from 8’ to 51-inch rim diameters covering wide applications including underground mining tyres and specialized port application tyres. Now having ventured into the Radial OTR BKT representatives believe the company is “all geared up to make in-roads and widening its penetration in servicing this market."

R H Claydon Promotes Lassa Dealer Performance Centres

RH Claydon is promoting a new marketing programme to participating Lassa passenger, 4x4 and van tyre retail dealers and service providers. Lassa tyres are produced by Brisa, a joint venture between Bridgestone and the Turkish Sabanci Corporation. According to a press release issued by RH Claydon, the company’s “collection for all seasons” includes Lassa Impetus Revo, Impetus Sport, Impetus 2, Atracta and Miratta tyres in passenger car, not to mention van units, transway and LC/R and more. In addition the programme purports too offer “extremely meaningful…incentive rewards within” to the participating dealers.
