Extra inches a first-class solution: Michelin Motorsport’s director talks race tyres and rim diameter

Motorsport, Premium

In October 2014, Michelin and Renault Sport announced they would jointly develop 17- and 18-inch diameter tyres for the single-seat Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula Renault 3.5 cars that compete in the WSR (World Series by Renault). Michelin evaluating 18-inch tyres for ‘F1 springboard’ Formula Renault championships

Motorsport, Premium

A condition Michelin says must be fulfilled before it considers a return to Formula 1 tyre supply is the change from the 13-inch tyres now used to an 18-inch size. Therefore, the decision made by the tyre maker and Renault Sport Technologies to evaluate the use of 18-inch tyres in the Formula Renault 3.5 championship – a series it views as a “springboard for drivers looking to reach Formula 1” – could be viewed as Michelin taking a step closer towards picking up where it left off in 2006. The two parties are also looking into using 17-inch tyres in the Formula Renault 2.0 championship.

Michelin supplying Pilot Sport S9L to Renault Sport R.S. 01

Motorsport, Product News

As part of its association with the World Series by Renault (WSR), Michelin will supply Renault Sport its Pilot Sport S9L for the new Renault Sport R.S. 01. Michelin will provide the tyre in two sizes, 30-68×18 for the front wheels and 31-71×18 for the rear. The company says the decision to fit an 18-inch tyre is in line with its desire to see as many parallels as possible between racing and road tyres, an arrangement that enables new technologies developed for motorsport to be more swiftly carried over to road tyres.
