At this year’s North American International Motor Show, held in Detroit, Pirelli is showing off its latest products developed for the North American market. Meanwhile, some of the most desirable cars on show are wearing the Italian manufacturer’s P Zero tyres.
Continental’s newly-published provisional key figures for the 2013 fiscal year show the tyre and automotive component maker achieved an adjusted EBIT margin of 11.2 per cent, comfortably beating the target of at least 10.5 per cent set last November. Year-on-year sales increased slightly, rising from €32.7 billion to €33.3 billion.
BMW UK says the new electric i3 electric “defines the car of tomorrow”, a sizable claim backed up by exclusive tyre supplier Bridgestone, who describes the i3 as representing a “milestone in automotive history”. The tyres designed specifically for fitment on the i3 also required, says Bridgestone, the adoption of an entirely new concept. The answer was something it calls ‘ologic technology’.
At the same time as making its initial public appearance at the Tokyo Motor Show, the Dunlop Enasave 100 – the world’s first tyre entirely made from fossil-free materials – has gone on sale in Japan. The Tokyo Motor Show 2013 opens to the public on 23 November, and during the press days ahead of the official start of the exhibition Bridgestone unveiled its second generation ‘air free’ concept tyre. The manufacturer says the latest improvements to the air free concept bring it one step closer to developing a viable, commercially available non-pneumatic tyre; the second generation concept features improved load-bearing capabilities plus a more ‘environmental’ design and driving performance.
With Bridgestone claiming to ‘lead the way in quality, technologically innovative goods,’ it is unsurprising to hear of the brand’s significant advances in the area of sustainability and ‘green tyres.’ Bridgestone used the Geneva Motor Show 2013 as a platform to announce the successful development of the new ‘ologic technology tyre’ as large and narrow concept. The launch of the ologic is one of Bridgestone’s initiatives to achieve the goal of ‘contributing to globally agreed target (50 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions)” defined for the group’s efforts toward reducing CO2 emissions in its long-term environmental vision.

VWE (a provider of VRM license plate search technology in the Netherlands and also a reseller of DriveRight products) has produced a case study demonstrating usage of Drive Right tyre and wheel data. VWE has linked the data from DriveRight directly with the Dutch number plate register. This allows customers to get the correct combination of wheels and tyres for their vehicle by using their number plate in the website search, where the VWE solution is available. Profile Tyrecenter from the Netherlands has become the first company to use this database and, in the company’s own words, take a step ahead of their competitors.
Bentley could use a diesel engine for the first time in its history in the SUV which was recently confirmed for production.
Speaking at the Frankfurt Motor Show, CEO Dr Wolfgang Schreiber said: "We will investigate a diesel engine. In that platform (the Bentley will share its underpinnings with the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q7 and VW Touareg) a diesel engine will be implemented, anyway, so it could make sense. The numbers in Europe could be very high."
Dunlop has developed tyres for the new Opel Monza Concept car, revealed at the 65th International Motor Show in Frankfurt this week. Dunlop says that work on the concept tyre, in size 245/35R21, began in early 2013 and underwent a number of stages in collaboration with Opel to meet the car manufacturer’s expectations. The design features the same sleek lines found on the Monza Concept, enhancing the car’s overall look through the tyres and onto the ground.
“Dunlop and Opel design teams worked on the design and development of the tyre to ensure the tread matched the sleek shape of the car perfectly”, explains Helmut Fehl from Dunlop’s advanced design and development centre in Hanau, Germany. “Every detail of the tyre was discussed, evaluated and designed to meet the highest standards and expectations of the Opel team.”
