Formula 2 is already established as the place to watch the Formula 1 drivers of tomorrow. In 2020, the championship will also be home to a new technological innovation as it adopts 18-inch tyres from Pirelli: the same size that will be raced in Formula 1 from 2021 onwards.
In 2021, Formula 1 will bid farewell to 13-inch rims and tyres with chubby sidewalls, with the switch to an 18-inch dimension taking place that season. The onus falls upon exclusive tyre supplier Pirelli to develop rubber for the 2021 F1 cars, and Pirelli says its development will be greatly aided by the adoption of the 18-inch tyre size in ‘feeder’ series Formula 2 from 2020.
Formula One’s teams will use the same three compounds selected for China at Bahrain’s Sakhir circuit: the P Zero Red supersoft, P Zero Yellow soft, and P Zero White medium. Knowing the track as a favoured year-round test venue for various series, Pirelli states that it will above all test traction, especially since it is the first of three scheduled night races for the 2017 season.
