Maxxis has developed a range of skid steer tyres designed to cope with varied heavy duty industrial applications safely and efficiently, including construction, agriculture and dockside freight, the latter of which is identified by the brand as a particularly fruitful area for spreading its popularity. “Our industrial tyres feature a specially formulated durable rubber compound, extra strong casings and robust sidewalls to deliver superior traction and long life when put to work in the most demanding applications,” says Maxxis International UK’s managing director Derek McMartin. “Their versatility is proving popular with dockside freight businesses, which is helping us to promote the Maxxis brand in this niche marketplace.”
During the Material Handling Equipment Distributors Association Convention in Phoenix, Arizona on May 1 and 2, Amerityre Corporation introduced its new ‘high performance’ forklift tyre. The new tyre has been produced utilising a material called Kryon, first developed in 2009. According to Amerityre chairman Tim Ryan, “this new proprietary compound in our Kryon line has been designed to improve durability and load-carrying capacity as compared to conventional rubber tyres. Of special interest to electric lift users, the new Kryon tyres offer significantly reduced rolling resistance.” A particular quality of all tyres produced using the Kryon material is that they are non-marking.
The ‘hall of fame’ is a uniquely American way of showing esteem to a person or company; typically, only those who display exceptional skill or merit in their specialty area are admitted. It is thus with pride that Pirelli has announced its Agro business unit has been admitted into the John Deere Hall of Fame.
Independent sawmiller and leading timber supplier James Jones and Sons has switched its entire industrial machinery fleet to Michelin tyres on its Lockerbie Sawmill after recording tyre life gains. The 150 year-old firm Larbert, Stirlingshire firm’s Lockerbie Log Yard manager Iain Gale said it switched to the XZM tyres after using mostly budget fitments: “We had a few Michelin tyres on our forklift trucks, but on the whole we were buying according to price, thinking it would save us money. In fact, the reverse was true.”
A timber merchant in the Tayside town of Perth is switching over to a 100 per cent Michelin policy across its Machinery fleet following a trial using XZM industrial tyres fitted on two forklift trucks. The firm, Glenalmond Timber, had previously used solid tyres on its 13 counterbalance forklifts and three side-loader trucks, a solution production director Martin Clelland found unsatisfactory owing to their inability to withstand the wear and tear of moving bulk loads of timber around the yard.
The adaptor developed by German firm KTS Kunststoff Technik Schmölln for Continental’s CSEasy industrial tyre has received an innovation award from TecPart, the German technical plastics manufacturers’ association. In reporting the KTS product’s attainment of a TecPart Innovation Prize 2010, Continental comments that the CSEasy adaptor not only enables wheel changes without the need for mounting presses or specialist involvement, thereby greatly reducing forklift downtime and the expense involved in changing the wheel – it also lowers the tyre’s rolling resistance, gives longer mileage, and improves safety and environmental compatibility.
North Eastern Tyre and Exhausts has set aside £2 million for a two-year growth strategy centring on its wholesale division. As a first phase of this strategy the company has acquired a 69,000 square foot warehouse in Stockton for its NE Wholesale Operation. Service history for every truck can be quickly accessed giving users all the information they need to manage their tyre spend and evaluate performance.
Northern Ireland-based Fisher Engineering has reported that replacing the original equipment tyres on its Manitou rough terrain forklift truck with Michelin’s foam-filled XF and XZSL has increased tyre life. Operating out of its 21,000 sqm facility in Ballinamallard, near Enniskillen in County Fermanagh, the rough terrain forklift is used to transport structural steel around the stockyard prior to shipment to major new building projects.
Baxters, the famous soup maker, has choosen Continental’s SC 20 solid tyre on its fork lift truck fleet at its production and distribution facility in Fochabers. Fitting the SC 20 has reportedly improved safety, cut vehicle downtime and the whole life costs of tyres at the business. According to the company, the new tyres return three times the tyre life expectancy of the firm’s previous brand.
Baxters’ Fochabers production and distribution facility runs 25 Hyster trucks, a mixture of both gas and electric from 1.75 up to 3 tonnes. Trucks are maintained onsite on a three month service cycle by an engineer from Barloworld Handling Ltd.
John Pease, stores and warehouse manager is responsible for the forklifts at the Fochabers plant: “We had been using the standard Original Equipment solid tyres that came fitted to the trucks but they were performing very poorly. Vehicle downtime was excessive which made the operation very costly. Our plant is very demanding, running round the clock but the tyres just weren’t returning the performance that we expect. Tyres were wearing quickly and unevenly and were occasionally chunking leaving trucks unstable and creating a safety issue for both products and trucks.”
Following prosecution by the Health and Safety Executive, Pirelli Tyres Ltd has been fined £9,000 for an incident in which an employee’s leg was broken when he was hit by a forklift vehicle in the tyre maker’s Carlisle plant. Allan Miller, a 62-year-old contractor, was walking through an area within the curing department at the Dalston Road site when he was struck from behind by a pallet being carried on a forklift truck. He has been unable to return to his normal duties, the HSE reports.
