Titan 3Q figures show lower sales, but also reduced losses

Titan published third quarter 2016 financial shows sales for the third quarter of 2016 were $306.2 million, down 0.9 per cent, compared to $308.8 million in the third quarter of 2015. Gross profit for the third quarter of 2016 was $33.0 million, or 10.8 per cent of net sales, compared to $26.2 million, or 8.5 per cent of net sales, for the third quarter of 2015.

Kal Tire partners with University Of British Columbia

Kal Tire’s Mining Tire Group and the University of British Columbia have formed a research partnership that will allow the two organizations to collaborate in developing technology and solutions for the mining tyre industry. In the recently-signed memorandum of understanding (MOU), both parties agree to pursue research and innovation as part of a partnership that matches expertise from UBC Okanagan’s School of Engineering with the innovation goals of Kal Tire’s Mining Tire Group.

Back in the Americas: Continental offering OTR tyres again

Beginning this month, the company is re-establishing its sales and product lines in all of North America as well as Brazil and the Andean markets. Magna Tyres renews Cemex UK contract

Cemex is reportedly “very satisfied” about the performance of Magna Tyres because of “the low cost price per hour, the reliability of the tyres and low amount of breakdowns”.

Enno Straten takes over as MD of Continental CST

Effective 1 July 2016, Enno Straten has been appointed managing director of Continental’s Commercial Specialty Tires (CST) business unit. He succeeds Dr. Michael Märtens who left the company last year to concentrate on other projects outside the industry. Straten, who has worked at Continental for 17 years, will report directly to Dr. Andreas Esser, executive vice president of Continental Commercial Vehicle Tires.

Six years after it began operating in Western Australia, Kal Tire has expanded into Eastern Australia where the majority of major mines operate by buying Klinge & Co. No figure has yet been disclosed. “Even though our reputation is strong and recognized in many countries, it has been a challenge convincing customers of our credibility inside Australia as our experience there has been limited.” says Dan Allan, senior vice president, Kal Tire’s Mining Tire Group. “With Klinge, Kal Tire aligns with a well-respected, trusted company known to the Australian mining industry and secures our presence as a national tyre service provider.”

While low prices for the major commodities and metals have affected tyre makers on a global level and prompted production cutbacks for giant OTR mining tyres, the direction coal has taken is of greater significance here in the UK. British Geological Survey figures show output at British open cast coal mines fell almost 40 per cent between 2010 and 2014. This decline has understandably affected sales of tyres to this sector, yet the news is not all bad for OTR tyre manufacturers and suppliers – local demand for other off-road applications is in much better shape. Technical manager Jock Aitken recently went through Michelin’s products for these areas with us, and shared how to get the most from them.

Mitas has announced it will unveil its new 445/95R25 CR-02 mobile crane tyre in a world premiere on stand 127 of hall A6 at Bauma. According to the company, the Mitas CR-02 is a new tread design that extends the current range of CR-01 crane tyres. Mitas CR-02 has improved operating efficiency thanks to its lighter construction. It is also possible to mount CR-02 tyres on a one-piece rim, which reduces the overall weight of the mobile crane. These improvements are said to have a positive impact on fuel consumption.
