Recycling no longer the Cinderella of the tyre industry – BTMA

Sustainability has risen to become the leading mobility trend over the last few years, and the drive towards greater levels has permeated every major corner of the tyre business. While the focus of pro-environment efforts in the tyre business has often fallen to the tyre recovery sector, developing a Circular Economy necessitates a more holistic industrial input, from raw materials suppliers to manufacturers, from the environmental effects of the tyres in use to the material and energy it is possible to recover from end-of-life tyres. Recognising the fundamental place this theme has in our industry, this month Tyres & Accessories presents the latest news and analysis in the sustainability space, beginning with a general overview of developments in the recycling sector from the British Tyre Manufacturers Association (BTMA)’s perspective.

Itochu: Murfitts Industries acquisition about sustainability and vertical integration

When Kwik-Fit and Stapleton’s owner ETEL announced the recent acquisition of UK tyre recycling specialist Murfitts Industries on 20 December 2021, ETEL’s owner – the Japanese Itochu Group – also shared details of its rationale for the takeover.

Brembo celebrates 60th anniversary by planting forest

Brake systems specialist Brembo is marking its 60th anniversary by planting a forest of more than 14,000 trees and donating them to employees around the world. The Brembo Forest will rise in Kenya, near Lake Victoria, where Brembo will work in partnership with web platform Treedom – the first system that allows trees to be planted remotely and their stories followed online.

Nokian Tyres: corporate sustainability report

Nokian Tyres has published its Corporate Sustainability Report 2020, which it states was prepared “in accordance with the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) Standards” and verified by an independent third party. The Corporate Sustainability Report describes Nokian Tyres’ work on sustainability actions in 2020 in terms of product liability and safety as well as social, economic, and environmental responsibility.

Michelin tyres to be 100% sustainable by 2050

When Michelin launched its e.Primacy range in mid-November 2020, the French tyre manufacturer did so in the context of a goal to make all Michelin tyre 100 per cent sustainable by 2050. So how does Michelin plan to achieve this? One answer is the company’s expanding partnership with Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro), details of which were recently released (see separate article). But there are other parts of this plan.

Bridgestone Americas takes sustainability-linked credit

Bridgestone Americas has executed a US$1.1 billion sustainability-linked credit facility in partnership with Sumitomo Mitsubishi Banking Corporation (SMBC). Under this credit facility, the costs that Bridgestone incurs in relation to its borrowings will decline or rise in line with independent appraisals of its sustainability.

GPSRNR policy framework drives commitment to sustainable rubber sourcing

Members of the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR) convened the annual General Assembly on 23 September 2020. The event saw the approval of a members’ sustainability policy framework and the creation of a new membership category for smallholder producers of natural rubber.

Pirelli ‘Gold’ for sustainability with S&P Global

Company News

Pirelli holds the distinction of being the only company within the automotive components sector to achieve ‘Gold Class’ in the SAM Sustainability Yearbook 2020. Other tyre makers to gain a ranked position in the Yearbook were Hankook Tire & Technology and Nokian Tyres, which both achieved SAM Bronze Class, and Bridgestone Corporation, which was acknowledged as a Sustainability Yearbook Member.

Nokian Tyres selected for the DJSI World sustainability index

Nokian Tyres has been selected for Dow Jones’ DJSI World sustainability index. With a total sustainability score nearly twice as high as the industry average, Nokian Tyres significantly improved its results in the 2017 assessment. Nokian Tyres’ score of 78 points was only one point behind the industry’s highest-scoring company globally.

Cooper Tire & Rubber issues 2016 Global Sustainability Report

In its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability report for 2016, titled ‘Responsibility the Cooper Way’, Cooper Tire & Rubber reports that its energy usage intensity has been reduced by 18 per cent since 2009, while the intensity of water used in its tyre production has decreased seven per cent. During the same period, Cooper’s landfill usage intensity has decreased nearly 30 per cent and its greenhouse gas emissions intensity are down 12 per cent.

Bridgestone releases Sustainability Report 2016

In its Sustainability Report 2016, Bridgestone Corporation shares that last year its tyres’ rolling resistance was on average 13 per cent lower than in 2005. The company also achieved a 29 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions per net sales from operations and products’ after-use during this timeframe, as well as a 28.5 per cent reduction in water intake per unit and a 31 per cent improvement in resource productivity.
