This month we face the latest Brexit deadline. The deadline Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he would rather “die in a ditch” than overshoot. However, as we go to press no-one knows if we will Brexit on this date; and if we do, what kind of Brexit it will be. We reported how automotive manufacturers and their suppliers have made their feelings known en masse here, but the broader truth is that the details of the subject remain a great unknown. Amnesty International challenges electric vehicle battery manufacturers

Amnesty International is challenging automotive and specifically electric vehicle battery manufacturers to raise ethical standards and specifically “make the world’s first completely ethical battery within five years.” The challenge was laid down at the Nordic Electric Vehicle (EV) Summit in Oslo on 21 March 2019. For its part Amnesty is seeking to highlight how lithium-ion batteries, which power electric cars and electronics, are reportedly linked to “human rights abuses including child labour in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and environmental risks which could undermine their green potential”.

Gabor Kakuk, a Hella employee, sparked a recycling policy change after taking matters into his own hands to further improve the company’s green credentials. Every month in the UK, more than a million tonnes of plastic – particularly plastic bottles and cups – from homes, industry and businesses are used and disposed of in landfill, remaining in the environment for many years, often taking up to 500 years to decompose.

Hankook retains inclusion in DJSI World second year

Hankook Tire has been included in the globally renowned Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the second year in a row. The DJSI, launched in 1999 as a joint product of S&P Dow Jones Indices and RobecoSAM, is the first global index to track financial, environmental, and social influence of global top 2,500 companies in terms of market capitalisation. The DJSI includes sustainability leaders in each industry group who were identified through a corporate sustainability assessment.

Moto-tyres.co.uk is donating 5,000 US dollars to the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, which supports projects to improve men’s health. On 24 September 2017, tens of thousands of bikers worldwide will once more don their finest threads and dust off their vintage and classic motorbikes for a city tour. And all for a good cause: the event, which is taking place for the sixth time, has the aim of raising money to fight prostate cancer and fund suicide prevention initiatives. Last year it collected more than 3.6 million US dollars, and in 2017 organisers hope to raise over 5 million dollars.

In its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability report for 2016, titled ‘Responsibility the Cooper Way’, Cooper Tire & Rubber reports that its energy usage intensity has been reduced by 18 per cent since 2009, while the intensity of water used in its tyre production has decreased seven per cent. During the same period, Cooper’s landfill usage intensity has decreased nearly 30 per cent and its greenhouse gas emissions intensity are down 12 per cent.

On your bike – Transaid launches 2017 cycling challenge

International development organisation Transaid is calling on transport and logistics industry professionals to get on their bikes to raise funds for its life-saving work in Sub-Saharan countries, with the launch of its fifth European cycle challenge – taking place from September 22-25, 2017. The event will revisit the destination of Transaid’s first ever European cycling event from 2012, with up to 50 riders to complete the 240-mile adventure over three days in the saddle, cycling from London to the French capital.

Galgo partners Mexican state in green initiative

Galgo is partnering with the Mexican Hidalgo State Government, and other industries located along the Tula-Tepeji corridor, in the National Environmental Audit Program, an effort help reduce and reverse the damage and negative environmental impacts in that area. The Tula-Tepeji corridor has been recognized as an area experiencing a high level of negative environmental impact pollution and requires action from the local industries to help reverse this situation.
