Majority of cars still bought from car showrooms – survey

The reopening of car showrooms is good news for the industry, as new research finds that the majority of car owners (76 per cent) still buy their cars from a showroom, with nearly a quarter (24 per cent) of these second-hand cars. The survey of 2,000 UK drivers, which was commissioned by InsuretheGap.com, a leading supplier of GAP Insurance (Guaranteed Asset Protection) for new and second-hand cars, found that car showrooms are particularly popular with the over 55s with four fifths (81 per cent) buying from a showroom, compared to two thirds (66 per cent) of 18-34s.

Three in ten drivers wouldn’t know what kind of fuel-powered car to buy

A new survey of 2,000 UK drivers reveals that almost a third (30 per cent) say that if they were buying a new car or a new second-hand car they would not know whether to buy a petrol, electric or diesel one. Younger drivers, 18 – 34s, are even more undecided with 41 per cent saying they are unsure what type of fuel-powered car to go for.

Two-thirds of cars bought in cash

Nearly two-thirds (63 per cent) of car owners bought their last car outright using cash or a debit card, with over 55s the most likely to do this. The East of England is the region most likely to buy their car outright (70 per cent), and the North East the least likely to (51 per cent).

Writing off a car might seem unusual to many, but nearly a third (29 per cent) of UK drivers have written a car off, almost a third of men (32 per cent) and a quarter of women (26 per cent), and 7 per cent have written a car off more than once.

How 10 popular electric cars depreciated over a three-year period

A new study shows striking differences in the depreciation of ten popular electric cars from their purchase price three years ago to their current value. Research by InsuretheGap.com, a leading supplier of GAP (Guaranteed Asset Protection) insurance for new and second-hand cars, found that the Renault Zoe (Electric) lost the most value, depreciating by 61 per cent in three years from its purchase price of £19,988 to only £7,830 value in 2019.

A survey of more than 2,000 UK drivers, which was commissioned by InsuretheGap.com, a leading supplier of GAP (Guaranteed Asset Protection) insurance for new and second-hand cars, finds that over two-thirds (69 per cent) want new legislation for cyclists including bikes having a registration number to make them identifiable (68 per cent), and more than half (53 per cent) saying cyclists should be required to hold a licence.
