epyx, the ecommerce fleet platform, has announced three new director level appointments. Aditya Varadpande has been appointed as director of the newly-created growth and marketing department. He shall also lead the company’s international operations.

Goodyear has launched its next generation website in the UK and Ireland. While not quite the pioneering retail strategy employed by the manufacturer’s US digital platform, the new site (www.goodyear.co.uk) has increased the company’s interaction with end-consumers – a reaction to the sustained growth in consumers researching their tyre purchase decision online. In an unusual move for tyre manufacturers’ own websites, Goodyear also provides a recommended sell-out price on its tyres, which indicates a step towards the retail activity of its American cousin, albeit without any sort of requirement of the retailer to honour that price.

A survey of 2,000 people carried out for Continental Tyres suggests that three in five UK motorists currently worry about the safety of fully autonomous vehicles. Reporting the findings of this survey, Continental also shares that 51 per cent of respondents expressed concerns that failures in the technology would result in the vehicle breaking down, while 40 per cent simply mistrust the concept of a self-driving car. A fifth of the surveyed motorists even said the concept scares them.

The winter tyre business is weather-dependent, and the milder temperatures seen in Europe at the start of the season haven’t been good news for manufacturers of these products. Bloomberg reports that Continental has experienced reduced demand for its winter tyres at the end of 2015. The tyre maker told Bloomberg that this season’s winter tyre sales will “probably will be slightly below levels of a year ago.”

Annual registrations of new cars in the UK grew for the fourth consecutive year in 2015 and exceeded 2.6 million units for the first time. Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that the market has posted increases in all bar one of the past 46 months, and a bumper December – up 8.4 per cent and the biggest ever – saw 180,077 new cars registered.
