The industry’s 3mm campaign has received support from top UK motoring TV programme Fifth Gear, which called on Government to change “dangerous” UK tyre tread laws. (Akron/Tire Review) Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire has again undertaken a recall of certain Firestone Radial ATX, Radial ATX II and Wilderness AT tyres in size P235/75R15 and Wilderness AT tyres in sizes P255/70R16. These tyres were originally recalled in August 2000 and October 2001 as part of the massive tyre recall in connection with Ford Motor Co. SUV and light trucks.

Jato Dynamics analysis of new car registrations in the EU and EFTA region for the first five months of 2006 shows that the overall European market for new cars rose by 2.7 per cent compared with the same period in 2005, to a total volume of 6,918,355 units. Year-to-date (YTD) growth was significantly higher than in April, due to an overall rise of 10.6 per cent in the European market for new cars in May 2006 (a total volume for the month of 1,455,421 units).

Jaguar Cars has selected two Dunlop SP Sport performance tyres for its new supercharged XKR, a 420-horsepower sporting Grand Tourer. Dunlop tyres, standard on the 2007 Jaguar XK, have also been specified for the XKR, which delivers 120 more horsepower. The XKR will jet to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds; the car arrives in showrooms by year’s end. The convertible model takes 5 seconds.

Breyton Design has introduced several new sizes of its Spirit wheel. The 21, 22 and 23 sizes are designed to complement the appearance of all models in the BMW range. The Spirit wheel comes with silver-effect paint and a stainless steel coating for its drop-base rims, thus ensuring a long service life and good value retention. The new sizes are 9.0 x 21, 10.5x 21 and 10 x 22 for the 7-series, the X5 and X3 and, last but not least, 11 x 23 with 315/25 ZR 23 tyres for the X5. All Breyton wheels are TÜV-tested and are, of course, supplied with TÜV certificates.

Kumho Tire is to voluntarily recall 78,321 light truck tyres sold in the North American market due to blisters on sidewalls. The tyres to be recalled are nine types of product under the Venture HT 824 and Venture AT KL78 series. They were manufactured in Kumho Tire’s factory in Nanjing, China, exclusively for the U.S. and Canadian markets.

In a move that could remove the threat of cheap tyres imported from China, the government proposes to make quality certification compulsory for tyres manufactured and sold in India, says the Indian website of Business Standard. This would mean that only tyres that conform to the standard specified by the Bureau of Indian Standards can be sold and foreign tyres cannot be sold through local outlets.
