Michelin Challenge Design winners announced
The winners of the global 2015 Michelin Challenge Design have been announced, with the tyre maker honouring 15 individuals and teams from the UK and nine other countries for their efforts. The winning designs for the latest challenge, which focused on the theme “Drive Your Passion: Engaging Senses, Soul and Emotion,” were selected from more than 1,100 registrants in 81 countries.

Bridgestone confirms its participation in the 65th IAA Commercial Vehicles International Motor Show, which will be held in Hanover, Germany from 25 September to 2 October, and says the theme of its exhibition presence (hall 16, stand C01) will be the company’s renewed Total Tyre Care programme. First presented at the previous IAA Commercial Vehicles show and rolled out in the UK beginning in 2012, Total Tyre Care is Bridgestone’s three-level, three-component fleet tyre programme.

Infinity reports that it intends to step up its European truck tyre development and sales activity in 2015. And as a prelude to this, the company will be debuting its range at IAA 2014 in Hall 25 Stand A02. “The decision to be at the largest commercial vehicle fair is to support our engagement in the important European market”, commented KK Singh, European sales manager. “Infinity offers high quality products for the most demanding conditions. Our latest products are being developed in the most modern facilities and further tested in Europe and are being constantly improved to meet the highest regulation standards. Our growing success, and also the positive reactions of our partners, now gives us confidence to display our excellent products to wider markets”.

Accella Performance Materials, Inc., a manufacturer of polyurethanes, plastisols and recycled rubber products, has announced the acquisition of Zeus Tyrefill Systems GmbH (Zeus), manufacturer of tyre fill systems and flatproofing solutions for heavy duty industrial and “off the road” vehicles. Zeus will be a subsidiary of Accella Polyurethane Systems, further building the tyre fill business along with the Arnco and Pathway Performance Polymers subsidiaries. No price details have been revealed.

Michelin’s acquisition of all outstanding shares in Brazilian digital fleet management and freight security firm Sascar Participações S.A. and its affiliated companies, which was first announced on 9 June, has now been completed. The transaction has been approved by the Brazilian competition authority (CADE) and all other closing procedures were finalised on 29 August 2014.

Later this month the IAA Commercial Vehicles show will get underway in Germany, and Hankook Tire says one of its aims as an exhibitor will be to promote extremely fuel-efficient products; both world premieres Hankook plans for the show address the increasing demand for cost-effectiveness and efficiency, particularly in the freight forwarding business. Hankook will also focus on tyres for the original equipment segment and display its 3PMSF-labelled all-season and new winter tyres, along with new sizes for existing truck tyre ranges.

The losses Danish pension fund administrator PKA has incurred through its investment in recycler Genan may be even higher than previously thought. On 29 August, the Jyllands-Posten (Jutland Post) shared new evidence that indicates PKA’s losses to be Kr 1 billion (£106.2 million), rather than the Kr 830 million that PKA had calculated. If this new figure accurately reflects the loss PKA has incurred due to its involvement in the tyre rubber recycler, then it represents a loss of Kr 3,800 (£403) for each of the pension fund administrator’s 260,000 members.

Things are looking up for the Western European commercial vehicle trailer market, which in turn is a good sign for the truck tyre business. Market analysts from consulting firm Clear International reports that trailer demand in the largest seven Western Europe economies is forecast to increase by 15 per cent during the course of 2014. According to the analysts, this is the first report in roughly two years that has not reported a downturn in the economic outlook.

Nexe Tire’s Nblue eco tyre has won the US Green Good Design Award 2014. The awards are organized by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design in cooperation with the European Center for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies. It selects award winners in the categories of environmentally friendly products, people, organizations and architects, with the Nblue eco being named the winner in the product category at this year’s Green Good Design Awards. Their intention is promote “excellent environmentally friendly design”.
