Michelin X Works Z tyres launched in North America
Michelin Americas Truck Tires has introduced the Michelin X Works Z all-position heavy duty tyre for mixed on/off-road applications used in demanding environments. According to the company, the tyre is designed to improve uptime with a 50 per cent wider protector ply and a thicker layer of cushion gum than leading competitors. Performance gains reportedly include a 5 per cent increase in mileage.

On Wednesday 8 June, Sameer Africa CEO Allan Walmsley told local newspapers that the firm, which makes Yana brand tyres, would earn higher margins contracting-manufacturing with tyre producers in China and India. No names were overtly mentioned, but an unnamed Indian firm that bid unsuccessfully Sameer during the last year is thought to be a key suitor. No date for the closure of production and transition to contract manufacturing has been given, but judging by the nature of speculation surrounding Sameer’s ownership and business in general it is likely to be an ongoing process.

According to company representatives, which market themselves as yourtyres.co.uk over here, the trade fair appearance proved extremely positive, resulting in “hundreds of interesting and constructive discussions with international clients and media representatives.”

Tech Europe (EMEA) reports that the company had a “hugely successful week” at the last Reifen Show in Essen. During the course of the even Tech Europe showcased its online portfolio of Tech tyre repairs and wheel service solutions, presented developments in TPMS, including the new OE-R TPMS sensor programme, the new VT36 Diagnostic Tool and the Tech T-Pro configurable sensor, showed its expertise in retreading and OTR repairing, displayed its Pang Industrial range and introduced a new range of mounting pastes and hand-cleaners.

Back when Continental’s facility in Korbach, Germany celebrated its centenary in 2007, most people assumed the site’s best days were already behind it. At the time, the company aimed to relocate a greater proportion of its production to lower cost countries, and the onset of the financial crisis a year or so later did nothing to increase the attractiveness of locations such as Korbach. Therefore it came as a surprise when Continental announced a €45 million investment to set up a “factory within a factory” at the Korbach plant. On 7 June this facility, the High Performance Technology Center (HPTC), entered operation.

Once Voith’s new tyre and wheel assembly line is up and running in September, it will handle up to 1,000 different derivatives of wheels and tyres. This new line alone will then have the capacity to produce almost a million assemblies a year on a two-shift basis with the ability to complete 1.5 million with three shifts.” Transfer of the line from the existing facility on Torrington Avenue will begin in July. When combined, the two lines will have the capacity to produce around 2.5 million assemblies per year based on three shifts.

Larry Lee – vice president for international distribution at Stamford – pointed out that an all-new range of bus tyres for the mid-tier market sector were being launched for the first time in Europe plus a series of new wheel designs and colours from Stamford Sport Wheels (SSW) popular Euro Technik range will be showcased which are specifically produced for the European alloy wheel sector.
