Michelin to show high mileage of broad product range, including second-line brands
Michelin will travel to Reifen 2016 with a comprehensive product mix representing its full portfolio of brands. Its booth (Hall 3, Stand C20) will contain Kleber and BFGoodrich, as well as retreading products Recamic and Michelin Remix among other Michelin products and services. Michelin states that it will focus its presentation on the high mileage achievable on its products across product segments.

Michelin reports the signing of landscaping products supplier Marshalls to its Effitires tyre management programme. The price-per-kilometre deal covers all of the company’s mixed fleet of 173 DAF, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Renault and Volvo tractor units and rigid trucks, along with 210 crane-equipped SDC trailers. It extends Marshalls’ existing Michelin preferred tyre supplier arrangement.

Kenda will exhibit new products specially designed for the European market to underpin its commitment to quality, the manufacturer states. Each of its latest products “use European requirements as a benchmark,” it added, “and have a clear focus on safety.” Its most important exhibit will be the latest Kenda ultra-high performance Emera A1summer tyre, which is designed to produce excellent handling on dry and wet roads with outstanding braking performance. The manufacturer will also shine a spotlight on its latest winter tyres; the Komendo Winter for vans and the Wintergen 2 for cars. Each of these new-generation products has been developed with the intention of achieving “a breakthrough into Europe’s quality segment by offering products for the European market,” Kenda stated.

Bridgestone is celebrating original equipment success after announcing contracts to supply tyres to the BMW 7 Series and X1. The top-of-the-range luxury BMW 7 Series saloon, launched in July 2015, is equipped with Bridgestone Potenza S001 UHP sport tyres in six sizes, all with the added safety of RFT (Run Flat Technology). Potenza S001 is Bridgestone’s flagship UHP tyre engineered for high-speed performance.

Although Continental says the economic environment in the first quarter of 2016 was as “difficult as expected,” the company reports making a good start to the year. In the three months to 31 March, the tyre maker and automotive supplier’s sales rose three per cent year-on-year to €9.85 billion, even though negative exchange-rate effects had reduced this sales growth by 2.1 percentage points. Adjusted EBIT climbed to €1.1 billion. At 11.3 per cent, the adjusted EBIT margin was higher than the previous years level of 10.6 per cent.

The recent acquisition of Italian tyre distributor Franco Gomme by the country’s leading aftermarket tyre distributor, the Fintyre Group, is said to have pushed Fintyre into the ‘top five’ of Europe’s independent tyre distributors – the two firms’ combined turnover is expected to exceed €400 million in 2016. Through its acquisition of Franco Gomme, Fintyre aims to enhance its position the Italian market through increased coverage, more widespread distribution and new sales channels.

Messe Essen, the organisers of the biennial Reifen event, looks likely to bow out gracefully at the end of an era represented by this year’s show. In the last Essen-hosted show ahead of its “trailblazing” move alongside Frankfurt’s Automechanika show in September 2018, or retreat in the face of Koelnmesse’s rival Tire Cologne show (see the April edition of Tyres & Accessories for complete details of the move, then delete as you see fit), the 24 to 27 May show will host 675 exhibitors, presenting their innovations for the tyre sector. This, Messe Essen states, represents a new record number of exhibitors in Reifen’s decades-long history. The organisers have also notched up another record with regard to the exhibition area: Reifen 2016 will occupy just over 60,000sqm of exhibition space.

The two organisations announced that they would enhance their working relationship through a global partnership across all Automechanika events from 2017 onwards, with the two major exhibitions coming together for the first time at Automechanika Birmingham in June 2017.

Any company that manages to secure exhibition space in the main hall of the Reifen show holds onto it tightly in future years, and this is something ZC Rubber (ZhongCe Rubber Group Ltd.) can confirm – the Chinese manufacturer will erect its stand in exactly the same Hall 3 space as it did two years ago, returning to stand C10. The company’s repeat appearance in the main hall shows that ZC Rubber doesn’t belong to the host of small and mid-sized manufacturers from the People’s Republic, who as a rule make themselves at home in another hall, rather it is the top player in this giant market and, in the last two or three years, held a place in the list of top ten global manufacturers.
