Goodyear tyres for ID.3

Date: 29th October 2020 Author: Stephen Goodchild Comments: 0
Goodyear is supplying 18” to 29” tyres for the VW ID.3

Volkswagen has added Goodyear to its list of approved tyre suppliers for the ID.3. The new electric car will wear Goodyear summer and winter tyres in a range of dimensions: The Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance in sizes 215/55 R18, 215/50 R19 and 215/45 R20, as well as Goodyear UltraGrip Performance and UltraGrip Performance+ winter tyres in sizes 215/55 R18 and 215/50 R19.

“We are very proud that Volkswagen has chosen to equip this pioneering model with Goodyear tyres,” said Hans Vrijsen, managing director OE at Goodyear EMEA, “Goodyear is committed to developing products that deliver the performance electric vehicles require. We are working with all major OEMs on electric and hybrid mobility and half of our original equipment tyre developments in Europe are for EVs and hybrids.”

Technical specifications

Goodyear describes its EfficientGrip Performance as a leader in the high-performance segment, adding that the tyre is characterised by high mileage and high levels of braking performance in both dry and wet conditions. It credits this performance to a number of innovative features: The tread’s high elasticity and flexibility helps reduce wear. Lower stiffness in the compound facilitates the bending of the blocks, which together with a greater number of edges helps with evacuation of water in the wet. Larger tread blocks increase cornering stiffness, providing greater stability in dry emergency manoeuvres.

The tyre maker developed the UltraGrip Performance range to provide better braking and grip for high-performance cars in wet, dry, icy and snowy conditions. Two key technologies help here: Traction Protect technology, which includes a new resin that improves the tyre’s deformation and reformation capabilities, allowing an improvement in braking forces, translating into greater grip. Winter Grip technology contains a new mixture of compounds that provides better rubber elasticity at low temperatures, increasing grip on both snow and ice.

In addition, the Goodyear tyres fitted to the ID.3 feature SealTech, the manufacturer’s sealant technology that seals punctures up to 5mm in diameter in the tyre’s tread area.

A number of manufacturers have already announced that their tyres will be fitted as original equipment on the ID.3. Volkswagen has approved Continental summer, winter and all-season tyres, while Bridgestone will supply its Turanza Eco.
