Further strike action expected at Hankook Tire plant in Hungary

The trade union representing workers at Hankook Tire’s factory in Hungary warns further strikes will take place unless pay rise demands are met. In a statement, the Federation of Chemical Workers of Hungary (VDSZ) warns that strikes could occur as soon as today.

Workers at the Hankook Tire plant in Dunaújváros held a two-hour warning strike last Wednesday after negotiations over wages yielded no results. The VDSZ is dissatisfied with Hankook’s offer to increase employee wages by an average of 13.6 per cent; it notes that while recently-hired employees may see their incomes rising by up 20 per cent, those working for the company longer may only see an increase of around ten per cent. The VDSZ demands a fixed 18 per cent increase in employees’ basic wages.
