Dr Alan Muhr awarded the Hancock Medal

In his long and varied career Dr Alan Muhr has published numerous book chapters, and nearly 100 articles

Tun Abdul Razak Research Centre (TARRC)’s Dr Alan Muhr, who is Head of the Engineering Design Unit, has been awarded the Hancock Medal 2018 for his outstanding service to the rubber industry by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining in London (IOM3) in London.

Dr Muhr has published many book chapters, and nearly 100 articles. His research interests have ranged widely, enabling him to contribute significantly to the rubber sector.

The Hancock Medal is open to members of the Institute and is awarded every two years, alternating with the Colwyn Medal. This award was presented to Dr Muhr at an awards ceremony at the IOM3 HQ in London on Tuesday 16 October 2018. Previous recipients of the Hancock Medal have included Dr Andrew Tinker, former Director of Research at TARRC.

On receiving the Hancock Medal Dr Muhr said: ‘Thank you to the IOM3 for this award, it is a much appreciated honour to have my humble endeavours in applied rubber science for the last 35 years associated with the great name of Hancock, a famous pioneer of the subject’.

First awarded in 1951, to an individual for outstanding service to the rubber industry, the Hancock Medal is only open to members of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. Given alternate (even) years with the Colwyn Medal.

This award is in recognition of the pioneering work of Thomas Hancock (1786-1865) in introducing the vulcanised rubber manufacturing process into Europe in 1857.
