Auto Express tests aftermarket TPMS

Although the fitment of tyre pressure monitoring systems, or TPMS, in cars has only been mandatory since 2012, retrofit kits are available for older vehicles. Auto Express has tested nine such products.

The publication tested two types of TPMS – internal units fitted inside the tyre and external sensors that replace a tyre’s valve caps. The evaluated systems ranged in approximate price from £100 to £215. Auto Express took readings at 22, 36 and 44psi against a calibrated gauge, and also recorded reaction times and warnings. The consistency of each system’s readings was also rated over a 50-mile drive.

Auto Express considered an internal system, the Steelmate TP-S1I the top choice from the nine, with TyrePal’s Solar4 external sensor kit the runner-up.
